"Jan Tschichold (1902-1974) has good claims to being the key typographer of the twentieth century : one of the leaders of the modernist movement of the 1920s, and, in the classical typography of his later career, perhaps the first typographic postmodernist. Active literature is a close study of his modernist years, based on extensive research in the archives and introducing a wealth of fresh reproductions. Burke lays particular emphasis on Tschichold as a propagandist of New Typography, through his many books and articles, showing that he was as much an explainer as a designer. The subject comes to life in the letters written between colleagues across Europe in the turbulent years of the Nazi ascent to power. The book is introduced with air essay by Robin Kinross, discussing Tschichold's present reputation, and is rounded off with a selection of key texts by the subject."--Jacket.

The international creation of typefaces after 1950 was decisively influenced by the Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger. His Univers typeface and the machine-readable font OCR-B, which was adopted as an ISO standard, are milestones, as is his type for the Paris airports, which set new standards for signage types and evolved into the Frutiger typeface. With his corporate types, he helped to define the public profiles of companies such as the Japanese Shiseido line of cosmetics. In all he created some fifty types, including Ondine, Méridien, Avenir, and Vectora.Based on conversations with Frutiger himself and on extensive research in France, England, Germany, and Switzerland, this publication provides a highly detailed and accurate account of the type designer's artistic development. For the first time, all of his types - from the design phase to the marketing stage - are illustrated and analyzed with reference to the technology and related types. Hitherto unpublished types that were never realized and more than one hundred logos complete the picture.

German typographer Paul Renner is best known as the designer of the typeface Futura, which stands as a landmark of modern graphic design. This is the first study of Renner's typographic career, detailing his life and work to reveal the breadth of his accomplishment and influence. Renner was a central figure in the German artistic movements of the 1920s and 1930s, becoming an early and prominent member of the Deutscher Werkbund while creating his first book designs for various Munich-based publishers. As the author of numerous texts such as Typografie als Kunst (Typography as Art) and Die Kunst der Typographie (The Art of Typography) he created a new set of guidelines for balanced book design. Renner taught with Jan Tschichold in the 1930s and was a key participant in the heated ideological and artistic debates of that time. Arrested and dismissed from his post by the Nazis, he eventually emerged as a voice of experience and reason in the postwar years. Throughout this tumultuous period he produced a body of work of the highest distinction.

In this digital age of computer-generated graphics and typography, it's refreshing to find typographers who still believe in working by hand. No longer relegated to designer's sketchbooks, hand-drawn type has emerged from the underground as a dynamic vehicle for visual communication from magazine, book, and album covers to movie credits and NFL advertisements. As the practice and appreciation of hand-drawn type grows, it s time to celebrate the work of those typographers whose every letterform is a work of art. Hand Job collects groundbreaking work from fifty of today's most talented typographers who draw by hand. Graphic designer and hand typographer Michael Perry selects work representing the full spectrum of design methods and styles. Each hand-drawn work is entirely shaped by the artist's unique process every one a carefully executed composition enhanced by unplanned 'accidents' of line, color, and craft. Hand Job also includes photographs of found type, artists studios, and the tools that help make typography come to life. Whether you are looking to invigorate your design work or are just in need of a little offbeat inspiration, Hand Job will have you reaching for your favorite pen.
