Abstract

In the twenty-first century, the widespread integration of computer technologies has brought text-based information into many facets of everyday life. This has caused an ever-growing interest in typography across many fields of visual communication, where text and letterform play a central role in disseminating social trends and reflecting the spirit of the times.Arabic Typography takes the reader through a comprehensive study of Arabic letterforms, starting with a concise historical overview of their development and styles, and proceeding to the latest design and technological advances. It attempts to establish the foundations for Arabic type-design by drawing lessons from past practices and aesthetic conventions, in order to retain the enduring traits that are of relevance for improvement and innovation in future type-design creations.Going beyond the historical facts to discuss current design issues pertaining to the creation and production of letterforms, it presents Arabic typographic design as an essential communication tool that should marry functionality and legibility to aesthetic delight. This book will serve as a valuable reference on Arabic typography, and as an educational guide for design students, professionals and anyone who uses Arabic type and enjoys the visual appearance of this language and its letterforms.

Abstract

Letraset: The DIY Typography Revolution is the first comprehensive history of Letraset, the rubdown lettering system that revolutionised typographic expression. The book tells the Letraset story from its early days as a difficult-to-use wet system, to its glory years as the first truly democratic alternative to professional typesetting. The book also looks at Letraset?s present-day revival amongst a new set of admirers who recognise the typographic excellence of the system?s typefaces. The book comes with a gatefold Letraset timeline. It has an introduction by Malcolm Garrett, and features in-depth interviews with Mr Bingo, Erik Brandt, Aaron Marcus, David Quay, Dan Rhatigan, Freda Sack, Andy Stevens and Jon Wozencroft.Essays by Colin Brignall, Dave Farey and Mike Daines ? all key members of the Letraset team ? provide expert insight into the rise of Letraset as a typographic and commercial powerhouse. A central essay by Adrian Shaughnessy examines the typographic and cultural impact of the system. The book?s design is by the Spin team of Tony Brook and Claudia Klat. It uses many rare specimens from Letraset?s past ? catalogues, press ads, mailers, storage units, and of course, sheets of classic Letraset typefaces. Abstract

Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was one of the most important and influential representatives of Danish furniture design. In more than thirty years, he created a wealth of quality furniture, many pieces of which are sold as design classics to this day, for example his Spanish Chair. Influenced by traditional craftsmanship, he was also often inspired by Shaker furniture. He noted down all of his ideas immediately—whether on matchboxes, napkins, or used envelopes. This monograph examines Mogensen’s interesting approach and presents his most well known and most popular pieces of furniture. Workshop drawings, sketches, and photographs of his furniture as well as pictures from his everyday life permit fascinating insight into the world of the Danish designer, whose furniture is not only more than attractive but also one thing in particular: functional.
