The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Universal Design and the Built Environment (RERC-UD), a federally funded research center located in The University at Buffalo, hosted a series of State of the Science (SOS) Activities in 2008. The SOS activities generated a large number of papers on both research and the practice of universal design in community infrastructures, public buildings, and housing. This Ebook contains a selected group of these papers that provide a survey of notable developments in the field, reflections on how research and practice can be advanced further, and propo

The debut monograph from award-winning and acclaimed architecture and interior design practice Universal Design Studio - and the perfect expression of this award-winning studio's ethos and approach: to design from the inside out. With offices in London, New York, and Shanghai, its diverse portfolio includes collaborations with world-renowned brands Stella McCartney, Ace Hotel, IBM, H&M, Google, Fortnum & Mason, and The BBCOffice Group, and each project is underpinned by a rigorous research and development process. The book includes sketches, renders, archival and reference images, details, and drawings, which sit alongside stunning finished building and interiors photography, offering a holistic view of how the practice works and thinks. Includes In addition, insightful and engaging texts, as well as a series of conversations with key Universal collaborators, are used to to demonstrate how fundamental design is to creating better spaces, better experiences, and better cities. Part manual, part manifesto, the book is organized into three thematic chapters - Human, Rigorous, and Transformative - which together create a fascinating, multilayered depiction of an innovative contemporary design practice.

"Universal Design is the term used to describe the design of products and environments which can be used by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. It is not a euphemism for 'designs for people with a disability', but really is about designing to include all people, regardless of their age, ability, cultural background or status in life. However it remains the case that many designers and developers fail to understand the need for universal design and lack the skills needed to implement it. This book presents papers from the 3rd International Conference on Universal Design (UD 2016), held in York, UK, in August 2016. The theme of the conference was: learning from the past, designing for the future, and it aimed to bring together policymakers, practitioners and researchers interested in the different strands of universal design to exchange ideas and best practice, review some of the developments in universal design from the last 20 years, and formulate strategies for taking the concept of universal design forward into the future. The book is divided into two sections. Section 1: About Universal Design, and Section 2: Universal Design In Practice. The book will be of interest to all those whose work involves design, from the built environment and tangible products to communication, services and systems"--

Designing User Interfaces for an Aging Population: Towards Universal Design presents age-friendly design guidelines that are well-established, agreed-upon, research-based, actionable, and applicable across a variety of modern technology platforms. The book offers guidance for product engineers, designers, or students who want to produce technological products and online services that can be easily and successfully used by older adults and other populations. It presents typical age-related characteristics, addressing vision and visual design, hand-eye coordination and ergonomics, hearing and sound, speech and comprehension, navigation, focus, cognition, attention, learning, memory, content and writing, attitude and affect, and general accessibility. The authors explore characteristics of aging via realistic personas which demonstrate the impact of design decisions on actual users over age 55. Presents the characteristics of older adults that can hinder use of technology Provides guidelines for designing technology that can be used by older adults and younger people Review real-world examples of designs that implement the guidelines and the designs that violate them

Communal living, intergenerational living, living for families, handicap-accessible living, living and working, living and leisure time - the wide variety of current demands is shaping future concepts in housing, which will have to do justice to the needs of our increasingly multilayered society. The examples in this new volume in the In Detail series are correspondingly diverse. From the demand for stroller- and wheelchairaccessible housing through facilities that accommodate the needs of senior citizens all the way to the modernization of existing buildings, the selection of projects offers a panoramic overview. Organized thematically, In Detail: Integrated Housing highlights a variety of well-defined topics, such as handicap-accessibility and flexibility of use, and presents them together with explanatory technical articles and examples of realized projects. In closing, it provides addresses of information centers and associations as well as sources of additional information.
