Dit boek is een gids niet alleen voor hulpverleners, maar ook voor vrienden, familieleden van rouwenden en mensen in verdriet. Het wil hen helpen om elkaar meer tot steun te zijn en het biedt bruikbare inzichten, geïllustreerd met talrijke herkenbare voorbeelden uit het dagelijkse leven. Het boek groeide uit de vele vragen die de auteur in de voorbije jaren heeft gehoord bij rouwenden en zorgverleners. Het geeft praktische antwoorden op vragen als : Wat moet u weten? Hoe kunt u helpen? Naast verlies door de dood, besteeds de auteur ook aandacht aan andere verliessituaties, zoals verlies van de gezondheid, van het werk, van een perspectief. Bepaalde hoofdstukken geven informatie voor iedereen in de samenleving, andere richten zich specifiek tot artsen, paramedici, zorgverleners, ambtenaren, leerkrachten, werkgevers. Each persons grief is as unique as their fingerprint. But what everyone has in common is that no matter how they grieve, they share a need for their grief to be witnessed. David Kessler (2019) The pandemic has once again made us more aware of the fragility of life and the importance of being able to properly mourn the dead. Dramaturg Guy Cools has been researching laments and other rituals of mourning. He is particularly interested in how the emotions of loss need to be externalized. The laments are a formal device, used in many cultures to express and contain the emotions of grief. In a poetic, meandering, personal way Cools explores cultural habits, traditions, rituals, and artists performances. His narrative looks into many forms of laments: literary, anthropological, philosophical, and in contemporary art practices. The latter part delves into artistic strategies to address or embody mourning: dialogical strategies that deal with personal losses; collective mourning rituals and how they invite communities to witness these losses; contemporary examples of laments that are not only used to dialogue with the dead but also to communicate with loved ones who are absent because of migration or exile; a very specific form of mourning that occurs when we grieve for the unrealized potential of a child's unlived life, including that of an unborn child. And finally, the very recent phenomenon of lamenting not just the losses of the past, but also the loss of a future

In her monograph, 'An Occupation of Loss', artist Taryn Simon creates a detailed record of her years researching professional mourning, which culminated in a seminal performance at the Park Avenue Armory in 2016. During the installation, professional mourners from around the world simultaneously broadcast their lamentations within a monumental sculptural setting, enacting rituals of grief. The installation combined performance, sound, and architecture to consider the anatomy of grief and the intricate systems we use to manage fate and uncertainty. The book leads the reader through the complicated visa application process for the mourners invited to enter the United States, revealing the underlying structures governing global exchange, the movement of bodies, and the hierarchies of art and culture.
