Introduction to Public History: Interpreting the Past, Engaging Audiences is a brief foundational textbook for public history. It is organized around the questions and ethical dilemmas that drive public history in a variety of settings, from local community-based projects to international case studies. This book is designed for use in undergraduate and graduate classrooms with future public historians, teachers, and consumers of history in mind.The authors are practicing public historians who teach history and public history to a mix of undergraduate and graduate students at universities across the United States and in international contexts. This book is based on original research and the authors? first-hand experiences, offering a fresh perspective on the dynamic field of public history based on a decade of consultation with public history educators about what they needed in an introductory textbook. Each chapter introduces a concept or common practice to students, highlighting key terms for student review and for instructor assessment of student learning. The body of each chapter introduces theories, and basic conceptual building blocks intermixed with case studies to illustrate these points. Footnotes credit sources but also serve as breadcrumbs for instructors who might like to assign more in-depth reading for more advanced students or for the purposes of lecture development. Fascinerende inkijk in het oeuvre van Henry Moore en Nick ErvinckAan de basis van mijn werk liggen steeds de tegenstellingen tussen natuur en cultuur, tussen oud en nieuw. Ik ben een van de eerste kunstenaars die werkt met digitale technologie, maar ik maak tegelijk ook gebruik van traditionele methodes, zoals beeldhouwen, keramiek enzovoort. Je zou mijn werk kunnen omschrijven als een kruisbestuiving tussen de virtuele en de fysieke wereld.Nick ErvinckDit boek kwam tot stand naar aanleiding van het werk Cabinet of Curiosities, dat Nick Ervinck voor de bibliotheek van Waregem maakte. Daarmee bracht hij een hommage aan de iconische Britse beeldhouwer Henry Moore, aan wie veel hedendaagse kunstenaars, zoals hijzelf, schatplichtig zijn.Aan de hand van de elementen in Ervincks Cabinet of Curiosities (boeken, schelpen, schaalmodellen, speelgoed, kristallen) gaat deze publicatie op zoek naar de gedeelde fascinaties van beide kunstenaars en naar de gelijkenissen die over het generatieverschil heen te vinden zijn in hun werk.Naast een bijzondere interesse in organische vormen delen Ervinck en Moore ook de wens om artistieke grenzen te verleggen, elk binnen de mogelijkheden van hun eigen tijd. Ze willen een innovatieve vormentaal creëren met uiteenlopende, nieuwe materialen en technieken. Ze ambiëren steevast een kruisbestuiving tussen datgene wat door de mens gemaakt is en wat organisch gegroeid is. Het knippen en plakken van digitale beelden in 3D-software bij Ervinck doet conceptueel bijvoorbeeld denken aan de manier waarop Moore natuurlijke objecten integreerde in zijn maquettes.Verder hebben zowel Moore als Ervinck veel aandacht voor hoe een sculptuur zich tot de ruimte verhoudt. Ze creëren allebei biomorfe figuren die de wereld waarin ze geplaatst worden bevragen. Door gebruik te maken van zijn typische RAL 1003-geel maakt Ervinck van zijn sculpturen vreemde cesuren in ons door digitale en fysieke beelden overstelpte leven en slaagt hij erin de toeschouwer te laten stilstaan bij de betekenis van het beeld en bij zijn eigen positie in de wereld.Het boek wordt ingeleid door Sebatiano Barassi en bevat een essay van Jon Wood en een gesprek tussen Nick Ervinck en Sam Cornish.Bron: www.standaardboekhandel.be
