The racist term *play-white* comes from the apartheid era, when it connoted a black or mixed race person who lived as a white person: "So and so is a play-white." south African artist Bianca Baldi draws from studies of biomimicry and her own family history, as well as literary precedents - such as Nella Larsen's novel *Passing* (1929) - to reflect on racial passing and the instability of racial identities. *Play-White* alternates between layers of visualization and moments of discretion in order to explore questions of presence and evasion beyond their representation in black and white.

The newest issue from the ongoing publication series out of the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, this book engages the politics of time in art by examining historical narratives and memory, the unforeseen rhythms of time and the idea of visualizing time. The book connects postcolonial and queer debate around chrono-politics with artistic strategies involving temporal gaps and breaks, stutter time, citations and anachronisms, and collapses between time and meaning. An international group of art theorists, artists and artistic researchers highlight how temporal norms organize our biographies and intimate relations, as well as the handling of capital and cultural relations and suggest alternatives to entrenched concepts of what constitutes progressive and regressive cultures. A selection of artworks and recent debates in postcolonial and queer studies create the premise for this challenging conversation.

This unconventional publication explores the process of making art through the work and studio practice of Sophie Whettnall (b. 1973), a contemporary Belgian artist whose works range from video art, installation, and performance to sculpture and drawing. In addition to copious illustrations of Whettnall's artwork that highlight its relationship to the studio and the artist's creative process, the book features three conversations. The first, between Whettnall and fellow artist Marina Abramovic, explores transmission, violence, and femininity. The second, between Emiliano Battista and Scott Samuelson, situates Whettnall's work and practice in the broader context of contemporary art and the theoretical framework that shapes it. In the third, Carine Fol and Whettnall share with the reader the behind-the-scenes discussions and decisions that go into the mounting of an exhibition
