Abstract

The moral satires of van Havre introduced and translated for the first time. After a long career in the Ghent administration under the reign of the Archdukes, Jean van Havre (1551-1625) made his contribution to the field of literature with a triple satire in which he stigmatized vices and eulogized the virtues leading to 'La citadelle de la vertu'. After the original publication in 1621, van Havre revised and extended the book but it was his Antwerp friend Gaspard Gevaerts who took care of the definitive edition of the text published by Plantin-Moretus in 1627 after van Havre's sudden death. The moral satires of van Havre and his eulogy to his contemporary Burgundius are here introduced and translated for the first time, and compared to the original published text. An appendix dedicated to the correspondence between van Havre and Gevaerts closes this volume.

Abstract

Abstract

"This book establishes a fresh and expansive view of the grotesque in Western art and culture, from 1500 to the present day. Following the non-linear evolution of the grotesque, Frances S. Connelly analyzes key works, situating them within their immediate social and cultural contexts, as well as their place in the historical tradition. By taking a long historical view, the book reveals the grotesque to be a complex and continuous tradition comprised of several distinct strands: the ornamental, the carnivalesque and caricatural, the traumatic, and the profound. The book articulates a model for understanding the grotesque as a rupture of cultural boundaries that compromises and contradicts accepted realities. Connelly demonstrates that the grotesque is more than a style, genre, or subject; it is a cultural phenomenon engaging the central concerns of the humanistic debate today. Hybrid, ambivalent, and changeful, the grotesque is a shaping force in the modern era"--

Abstract

Abstract

From Leonardo’s drawings of grotesque heads to contemporary prints lampooning American political figures, the Metropolitan Museum has a vast and largely unknown collection of caricatures and other satirical works. This volume, the first to feature that collection, offers 160 such examples dating from about 1500 to the present— many of them previously unpublished—that reflect the age-old tradition of employing exaggeration and humor to convey personal, social, or political meaning. Stressing the continuity of certain artistic approaches, it examines the development of the genre across a broad expanse of centuries. The basic visual components of caricature are discussed and illustrated, as are themes such as physical types, people as animals or objects, social satire (food, fashion, and foreigners), and politics (British, French, and American). Artists as diverse as Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, William Hogarth, Thomas Rowlandson, Francisco de Goya, Eugène Delacroix, Honoré Daumier, and David Levine contribute their distinctive talents to this fascinating—and very amusing—compilation.
