Ever innovative and predictably diverse in their physical formats, artists' books occupy a creative space between the familiar four-cornered object and challenging works of art that effectively question every preconception of what a book can be. Many artists specialize in producing self-contained art projects in the form of books, like Ken Campbell and Susan King, or they establish small presses, like Simon Cutts and Erica Van Horn's Coracle Press or Harry and Sandra Reese's Turkey Press. Countless others who are primarily known as sculptors, painters, or performance artists carry on a parallel practice in artists' books, including Anselm Kiefer, Annette Messager, Ed Ruscha, and Richard Tuttle. Artists and Their Books / Books and Their Artists includes eighty important examples selected from the Getty Research Institute's Special Collections of more than six thousand editions and unique artists' books. This elegant catalogue also presents precursors to the artist's book, such as Joris Hoefnagel's sixteenth-century calligraphy masterpiece; single-sheet episodes from Albrecht DuIA rer's Life of Mary, designed to be either broadsides or a book; early illustrated scientific works; and avant-garde publications. Twentieth-century works reveal the impact of artists' books on Pop art, Fluxus, Conceptual, feminist art, and postmodernism. The selection of books by an international range of artists who have chosen to work with texts and images on paper provokes new inquiry into the nature of art and books in contemporary culture.

Luxueux livre d'artiste (constitué de plusieurs éléments rassemblés dans un coffret) basé sur le film 16 mm éponyme du cinéaste chypriote Haris Epaminonda : une déconstruction poétique et encyclopédique de l'oeuvre la plus accomplie de l'artiste à ce jour qui prolonge la réflexion sur la nature même du cinéma, engagée avec le film. Tourné en 16 mm à Chypre en 2012, le film Chapters a été présenté dans le cadre de plusieurs expositions : Kunsthaus Zürich, Modern Art Oxford, Point Centre for Contemporary Art, Nicosie (2013) et Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venise (2014). Elaboré, dans sa structure narrative même, au gré de ces présentations, conçu comme une sorte d'objet sculptural en mouvement, sans forme figée, le film est construit sur une succession de séquences poétiques méticuleusement mises en scène, des «tableaux» inspirés de la peinture de la Renaissance de Fra Angelico, du cinéma arménien de Sergueï Paradjanov, des univers de Dante et de Pasolini, aussi bien que du théâtre japonais Kabuki. L'artiste y développe, au travers des thèmes de l'amour, du désir, de la mort et du rituel, une réflexion sur la nature même du cinéma. Constitué de plusieurs éléments rassemblés dans un luxueux coffret, le livre est conçu comme une tentative d'archivage encyclopédique du film, compilant sur 26 posters dépliants des centaines d'éléments visuels référencés et annotés, sources d'inspiration, documents (géographiques, historiques, culturels et notamment rituels) et matériaux utilisés dans le film, aux côtés des photogrammes du film présentés sur 64 pages reliées. Un document qui constitue une «cartographie mémorielle» d'où émergent des associations nouvelles entre image et sujet, source et information, signification et abstraction.

Dit kunstenaarsboek verscheen naar aanleiding van de schenking van het kunstwerk 'Het sigarenkistje' (1997-2017) van Patrick Van Caeckenbergh aan het MSK Gent. De kunstenaar schonk dit werk ter gelegenheid van de presentatie 17de-eeuwse Noord Nederlandse schilderkunst van het MSK Gent, waarmee hij met een keuze uit zijn eigen werk onder de titel De Pantaloog (danke Schön) een persoonlijke dialoog creëerde. Het sigarenkistje was vroeger een werkkamer, maar is geëvolueerd tot een levendig kunstwerk: het is een architectuur van de herinnering, een archief van de verbeelding, een doos vol gedachtenissen, het slakkenspoor van een stuk van zijn leven en het verhaal van het dorp waar hij twintig jaar gewoond heeft. Al deze aspecten worden belicht in deze unieke publicatie - eerder een kunstenaarsboek dan een kunstboek - dat door de kunstenaar zelf ontworpen werd
