Abstract

After eight months in his childhood home helping his mother through her bout with cancer, Matthew Frank and his wife were themselves desperate for comfort. They found sanctuary in the most unlikely place-amid a collection of outcasts and eccentrics on a plot of land miles outside their comfort zone: a "mostly medical" marijuana farm in California. Pot Farm details the strange, sublime, and sometimes dangerous goings-on at Weckman Farm, a place with hidden politics and social hierarchies, populated by recovering drug addicts, alternative healers, pseudo-hippie kids, a

Abstract

"A native of Long Island, New York, Pete Young first grew cannabis on the roof of a friend's apartment building when he was fifteen years old. A fascination with marijuana cultivation quickly followed, with Young mastering techniques like HID lighting, water polymers, and genetics. Young moved to Canada in the late 1980s and soon began selling seeds out of the Great Canadian Hemporium in London, Ontario. After police raided the head shop he took part in one of the first constitutional challenges to Canada's drug laws. When he befriended a young man whose severe cystic fibrosis was aided by one thing only--marijuana consumption--Young began growing for medicinal users, and eventually became one of the biggest producers and distributors of illicit medical marijuana in Canada. Along the way he overcame every obstacle a guerilla grower faces, including crop theft, forest fire, police arrest, bankruptcy, home invasion, physical assault and, perhaps most intimidating of all, hungry male deer. In 2015, Young stepped onto the right side of the law when he co-founded and was named master grower at Indiva, a Health Canada-licensed producer of medical marijuana."--

Abstract

Do marijuana users cut back on consumption when the price rises? To what degree is marijuana consumption related to drinking and tobacco usage? What would happen if marijuana were legalised and taxed in the same way as alcohol and tobacco? Is marijuana priced in a similar way to other goods? Economics and Marijuana deals with these and other questions by drawing on a rich set of data concerning the consumption and pricing of marijuana in Australia, a country where the drug has been decriminalised in some, but not all, states. The book applies the economic approach to drugs to analyse consumption, pricing and the economics of legalising the use of marijuana. The result is a fascinating analysis of this widely used, but little understood illicit drug that provides much needed information and policy advice for a wide range of readers, including economists, policy makers and health professionals.
