At the suggestion of the Benedictine, Cistercian and Trappist communities of Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg, the 10th International Colloquium (May 19-21, 1980) organized by the Instituut voor Middeleeuwse Studies was devoted to the commemoration of the 15th Centenary of the birth of St. Benedict of Nursia. It was clear to the editors of the present collection of essays that only select aspects of the manifold cultural and economic life of these monastic communities could be presented in a single volume. Nevertheless it was hoped that the reader might intuit the constant evolution and adaptation to altered social circumstances characteristic of the Benedictine communities, and thus participate in the process of discovery shared by members of the Colloquium. To enhance this sense of discovery and to suggest the continuing Benedictine contribution during the following epoch, the editors accepted a final study, which of course extends beyond the strict chronological limits of the volume.

This book offers the first comprehensive history of the order of Tiron. As a unique survey of the Tironensian experience it sheds new light on traditional assumptions of twelfth-century monastic history. Previous sketches have been shaped by the life of the founder, the Vita Bernardi, which depicts the forests of western France teeming with holy men, and that self-image of hermit preachers in the wilderness has been deeply influential in the historiography of twelfth-century reform. Drawing from the latest advances in the understanding of hagiography and institutional memory, Thompson reinterprets key sources to offer a valuable contribution to the history of monasticism. She outlines the rapid dissemination of the Tironensian approach in the first thirty years of its existence, its network of contacts with the lay elite and the impact on the Tironensians of the successes of the Cistercians and Mendicants.

In the Middle Ages, the very existence of Benedictine monasteries was based on their proclaimed isolation from the world, a tenet diametrically opposed to their means of subsistence. Indeed, in order to extract goods from society (oblates, food, protection…), abbeys had to provide tangible goods and services in exchange (political support, hospitality…); monasteries were deeply integrated into medieval society while claiming to be isolated from it. This paradox of monastic life is often referred to in the Ordenforschungen or study of the monastic orders, but it is rarely used when it comes to studying specific institutions. This book aims to test the validity of this theoretical framework against the reality as lived by the monks of the Abbey of St Peter of Lobbes (Hainault, Belgium), from its founding until the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. In particular, it analyses the interactions between the abbey and its political and economic environment.
