Si la sculpture bourguignonne est surtout célèbre pour ses grands ensembles romans et l'exceptionnelle statuaire de la fin du Moyen Âge, de nombreux témoignages de l'intense activité artistique que connut la région au xiiie siècle subsistent encore, que la présente étude propose de redécouvrir ou de découvrir grâce à la mise au jour de pièces inédites.À partir d'une étude fine et d'une analyse approfondie de chaque ensemble et élément sculpté, nous découvrons au fil de l'ouvrage les réalisations de deux foyers artistiques majeurs qui se sont succédé sur le territoire bourguignon, l'un autour de l'imposante et prestigieuse église paroissiale Notre-Dame de Dijon et l'autre en plein cœur de l'Auxois.

Gothic art finds its roots in the powerful architecture of the cathedrals of northern France. It is a medieval art movement that evolved throughout Europe over more than 200 years.Leaving curved Roman forms behind, the architects started using flying buttresses and pointed arches to open up cathedrals to daylight. A period of great economic and social change, the Gothic era also saw the development of a new iconography celebrating the Holy Mary - in drastic contrast to the fearful themes of dark Roman times. Full of rich changes in all of the various art forms (architecture, sculpture, painting, etc.), Gothic art paved the way for the Italian Renaissance and International Gothic movement.

Terme entré dans l'usage courant au cours de la première moitié du XIXe siècle, l'art roman distingue, en histoire de l'art, la période qui s'étend entre le début du XIe jusqu'à la fin du XIIe siècle. Révélant une grande diversité d'écoles régionales, chacune démontrant ses spécificités, l'art roman, dans l'architecture comme dans la sculpture, est marqué par ses formes brutes. Par sa riche iconographie, au fil d'un texte captivant, cet ouvrage nous propose de redécouvrir cet art moyenâgeux, encore souvent trop peu considéré face à l'art gothique qui lui succéda.

In the thirteenth century, sculptures of Synagoga and Ecclesia - paired female personifications of the Synagogue defeated and the Church triumphant - became a favoured motif on cathedral façades in France and Germany. Throughout the preceding centuries, the Jews of northern Europe prospered financially and intellectually, a trend that ran counter to the long-standing Christian conception of Jews as relics of the prehistory of the Church. In this book, Nina Rowe examines the sculptures as defining elements in the urban Jewish-Christian encounter. She locates the roots of the Synagoga-Ecclesia motif in antiquity and explores the theme's public manifestations at the cathedrals of Reims, Bamberg, and Strasbourg, considering each example in relation to local politics and culture. Ultimately, she demonstrates that royal and ecclesiastical policies to restrain the religious, social, and economic lives of Jews in the early thirteenth century found a material analog in lovely renderings of a downtrodden Synagoga, placed in the public arena of the city square.
