Abstract

Although philosophy, religion, and civic cultures used to help people prepare for aging and dying well, this is no longer the case. Today, aging is frequently seen as a problem to be solved and death as a harsh reality to be masked. In part, our cultural confusion is rooted in an inadequate conception of the human person, which is based on a notion of absolute individual autonomy that cannot but fail in the face of the dependency that comes with aging and decline at the end of life. To help correct the ethical impoverishment at the root of our contemporary social confusion, The Evening of Life provides an interdisciplinary examination of the challenges of aging and dying well. It calls for a re-envisioning of cultural concepts, practices, and virtues that embraces decline, dependency, and finitude rather than stigmatizes them. Bringing together the work of sociologists, anthropologists, philosophers, theologians, and medical practitioners, this collection of essays develops an interrelated set of conceptual tools to discuss the current challenges posed to aging and dying well, such as flourishing, temporality, narrative, and friendship. Above all, it proposes a positive understanding of thriving in old age that is rooted in our shared vulnerability as human beings. It also suggests how some of these tools and concepts can be deployed to create a medical system that better responds to our contemporary needs. The Evening of Life will interest bioethicists, medical practitioners, clinicians, and others involved in the care of the aging and dying--from back cover.

Abstract

This report is the result of fieldwork research conducted under the framework of TAAD ("The Aging African Diasporas: Perspectives from Lombardia"), a project led by Prof. Alice Bellagamba (University of Milano-Bicocca) that for three years has investigated the meanings of aging for members of the Eritrean, Senegalese, and Egyptian diasporas in Lombardy. More specifically, this report explores the results that emerged from semi-structured interviews and informal conversations with 68 people of Eritrean origin (36 women and 32 men) collected in Milan and its province between 2018 and 2020. The great majority of my interlocutors were over 65 years old and moved to Italy between the end of the 1960s and the 1980s, but younger members of the diaspora have been also interviewed to better address how meanings of aging change along generational lines. Since the beginning of the lockdown imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic in March 20201, some of these conversations have been conducted using telephonic or online means of communication. In this report I use pseudonyms and other precautions to guarantee the complete anonymity of my interlocutors.

The 17 chapters included in the book, contributed by knowledgeable authors, review many important topics at an advanced level. Ageing in relation to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the importance of Antioxidant Vitamins and Antioxidant Enzymes are given prominent coverage. Consideration is also given to Vitamin D and the B Vitamins. Chapters on Nutrition, Nutrient Sensing, the Microbiome and Signal Transduction appear, along with Cholesterol Metabolism, Creatine and Creatine Kinase, Extracellular Matrix, Stem cells, Nuclear DNA Damage, Teleomere Length, Gene Expression and Epigenetics, Autophagy and protein Glycosylation. The book is primarily directed to advanced biomedical science and medical students, postgraduates, researchers and academics in the field of Ageing. A further supplementary volume of the Subcellular Biochemistry series, Biochemistry and Cell Biology of Ageing: Part II, covering the more Clinical Science aspects of ageing, will be published soon. Prof. J. Robin Harris is an Honorary Professor of the University of Mainz, he has broad biomedical science and electron microscopical experience and is actively involved in scientific publishing. Dr. Viktor I. Korolchuk is a Reader in Molecular Cell Biology at Newcastle University and is actively involved in cellular autophagy studies. .

Abstract

This book will serve to raise awareness of ways of healthy ageing that are facilitated by different forms of, and approaches to, physical activity, exercise and recreation. It presents a collection of studies focusing on the effectiveness of different methods that promote an active lifestyle among communities and older people in general. The contributions draw upon qualitative and quantitative paradigms that have 'active ageing' at the core of their investigations. The book imparts knowledge about recent advances in physical activity, recreation and wellbeing initiatives that will benefit the academic community and the wider public. It will also dispel myths about ageing and physical activity, 'trouble' popular notions of ageing, and present different intervention strategies and approaches that will serve to improve older peoples' lives and develop an understanding of active and healthy ageing. Examples are drawn from both global and local perspectives, walking initiatives, exercise classes for the over 50s, a 'dancing the tango for the D/deaf' project, an inter-generational dance project, 'Movers and Shakers' exercise intervention studies, and yoga/swimming and windsurfing case studies.
