There is No God: Atheists in America explores the growing number of atheists in America. While the United States is still a religious nation, there is an increasingly visible number of people who profess faith in no god, and yet, beyond their most famous spokespeople, we know little about this growing group. There is No God draws on national survey data, original research, and in-depth interviews to present an accessible overview of who atheists in America really are, how they come to t

This is a study of contemporary organised atheism as a fundamentally political phenomenon that is internally divided on ideological grounds, positioning atheism as one ideology and identity marker within the broad network of organisations collectively constituting the secular movement. This movement, which has existed since the nineteenth century, came to life in the early twenty-first century with the emergence of the New Atheism, an aggressive assault on religion led by thinkers such as Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens.

Over the last decade, ""New Atheists"" such as Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and Christopher Hitchens have pushed the issue of atheism to the forefront of public discussion. Yet very few of the ensuing debates and discussions have managed to provide a full and objective treatment of the subject. Atheism: What Everyone Needs to Know provides a balanced look at the topic, considering atheism historically, philosophically, theologically, sociologically and psychologically. Written in an easily accessible style, the book uses a question and answer format to examine the history of atheism, arguments

Humor and Irony as a Means of Combating Atheism in the Discourse of F.M. Dostoevsky . The question of the God's existence troubled Dostoevsky throughout his life. He created a very convincing portrait of the atheist of his time. He did not consider unbelievers immoral, but only "infected with recklessness", and when speaking of his atheist acquaintances, often admitted that they were good people. Dostoevsky created the image of an atheist as an intelligent person, who is guided not by the heart, but by the mind and who often evokes sympathy for his questing, his thinking, and his suffering (like Versilov or Ivan Karamazov). If we carefully consider the "atheistic" characters of Dostoevsky, however, we will see that atheism is a phenomenon associated with something both bad and funny. Through humorous details, Dostoevsky imperceptibly creates an image of the "atheist" as a comical and frivolous person.

Drawing on ethnographic inquiry and the anthropological literature on doubt and atheism, this volume explores people's reluctance to pursue religion. The contributors capture the experiences of godless people and examine their perspectives on the role of religion in their personal and public lives. In doing so, the volume contributes to a critical understanding of the processes of disengagement from religion and reveals the challenges and paradoxes that godless people face.

Annie Besant is primarily remembered as the international president of the Theosophical Society. One of the most important aspects of her career were the years that she was a professional atheist, which has given her a place in history as a pioneer feminist. The Origins of Theosophy contains thirteen of Besant's pamphlets, originally published from 1883-1890. This book is ideal for students of theology.
