Abstract

This book makes available for the first time in English—and for the first time in its entirety in any language—an important yet little-known interview on the topic of photography that Jacques Derrida granted in 1992 to the German theorist of photography Hubertus von Amelunxen and the German literary and media theorist Michael Wetzel. Their conversation addresses, among other things, questions of presence and its manufacture, the technicity of presentation, the volatility of the authorial subject, and the concept of memory. Derrida offers a penetrating intervention with regard to the distinctive nature of photography vis-à-vis related technologies such as cinema, television, and video. Questioning the all-too-facile divides between so-called old and new media, original and reproduction, analog and digital modes of recording and presenting, he provides stimulating insights into the ways in which we think and speak about the photographic image today. Along the way, the discussion fruitfully interrogates the question of photography in relation to such key concepts as copy, archive, and signature. Gerhard Richter introduces the volume with a critical meditation on the relationship between deconstruction and photography by way of the concepts of translation and invention. Copy, Archive, Signature will be of compelling interest to readers in the fields of contemporary European critical thought, photography, aesthetic theory, media studies, and French Studies, as well as those following the singular intellectual trajectory of one the most influential thinkers of our time.

Abstract

Derrida and the Economy of Diffèrance is a study of Jacques Derrida's philosophies, described on its original 1986 front cover flap text as follows: "Despite, or perhaps because of, the popularity of Jacques Derrida among literary theorists, the philosophical community has for the most part ignored or rejected his work. In this valuable introduction to the philosophical implications of Derrida's thought, Irene E. Harvey argues that Derrida is indeed a philosopher, perhaps the most significant philosopher of our time. Situating Derrida's philosophical contribution within the Continental tradition of Kant, Hegel, Nietzche, Husserl, Heideffer, and Levinas, Harvey demonstrates that deconstruction is an approach not only to textuality but also to metaphysics. Tracing the development of Derrida's thought from lesser to greater complexity, Harvey investigates his explicit claims concerning the identity, function, and structure of deconstruction, metaphysics, and differance. She concludes that there exists a relation of economy among these three concepts within the structure of Derrida's work as a whole."

Abstract

Based on archival translations of Derrida's as-yet untapped (1975-76) 'La Vie lL Mort' seminar, McCance's 'The Reproduction of Life Death' offers an unprecedented study of Derrida's engagement both with the logic of reproduction held by 1970s molecular biology and genetics and with reproductivity as theorized and performed by Freud in 'Beyond the Pleasure Principle'.

Abstract

Exemplarity and Chosenness is a combined study of the philosophies of Jacques Derrida (1930-2004) and Franz Rosenzweig (1886-1929) that explores the question: How may we account for the possibility of philosophy, of universalism in thinking, without denying that all thinking is also idiomatic and particular? The book traces Derrida's interest in this topic, particularly emphasizing his work on "philosophical nationality" and his insight that philosophy is challenged in a special way by its particular "national" instantiations and that, conversely, discourses invoking a nationality comprise a philosophical ambition, a claim to being "exemplary." Taking as its cue Derrida's readings of German-Jewish authors and his ongoing interest in questions of Jewishness, this book pairs his philosophy with that of Franz Rosenzweig, who developed a theory of Judaism for which election is essential and who understood chosenness in an "exemplarist" sense as constitutive of human individuality as well as of the Jews' role in universal human history.

Abstract

'For the Love of Psychoanalysis' is a work about what exceeds or resists calculation - in life and in death. It is a text about what emerges, and perhaps only emerges, from the difference between psychoanalysis and philosophy.
