Der Kampf gegen die Donatisten im römischen Nordafrika prägte die Amtszeit des Bischofs Augustinus. Um die Ansichten der Donatisten zu widerlegen, greift er in seinen Schriften neben theologischen Argumenten auf Ereignisse aus der Entstehungszeit des Schismas zurück. Mithilfe historischer Dokumente und ihrer Interpretation wollte Augustinus beweisen, dass die Donatisten zu Unrecht behaupteten, die reine, von "Traditoren" freie Kirche zu repräsentieren. Ausgehend von den antidonatistischen Schriften und Briefen zeigt Arne Hogrefe, wie Augustinus die Geschichte des Schismas rekonstruiert und darstellt. Dabei legt er Unterschiede sowohl gegenüber unterschiedlichen Adressaten als auch im Verlauf der Auseinandersetzung dar. Diesen Interpretationen werden die Geschichtsauffassungen der donatistischen Gegner entgegengesetzt, die sich in Ansätzen aus Augustins Schriften erschließen lassen. Es zeigt sich, wie die verschiedenen Glaubensüberzeugungen die Darstellung der Geschichte beeinflussten und das jeweilige Geschichtsbild prägten. Besonders deutlich traten die Gegensätze auf der Religionskonferenz von Karthago im Jahre 411 zutage, deren Verlauf und Ergebnisse ausführlich analysiert und interpretiert werden.

A study of how asceticism was promoted through Biblical interpretation, Reading Renunciation uses contemporary literary theory to unravel the writing strategies of the early Christian authors. Not a general discussion of early Christian teachings on celibacy and marriage, the book is a close examination, in the author's words, of how "the Fathers' axiology of abstinence informed their interpretation of Scriptural texts and incited the production of ascetic meaning." Elizabeth Clark begins with a survey of scholarship concerning early Christian asceticism that is designed to orient the nonspecialist. Section Two is organized around potentially troubling issues posed by Old Testament texts that demanded skillful handling by ascetically inclined Christian exegetes. The third section, "Reading Paul," focuses on the hermeneutical problems raised by I Corinthians 7, and the Deutero-Pauline and Pastoral Epistles. Elizabeth Clark's remarkable work will be of interest to scholars of late antiquity, religion, literary theory, and history.

For over four centuries the principal source of Christian European knowledge of Islam stemmed from a project sponsored by Peter the Venerable, ninth abbot of Cluny, in 1142. This consisted of Latin translations of five Arabic works, including the first translation of the Koran in a western language. Known as the Toledan Collection, it was eventually printed in 1543 with an introduction by Martin Luther. The abbot also completed a handbook of Islam beliefs and a major analytical and polemical work, Liber contra sectam Saracenorum; annotated editions of these texts are included in this book.
