Abstract

Over the past 20 years, biosensors have revolutionised the care and management of diabetes and have had important impacts in several other areas of clinical diagnostics. This new book is a completely revised edition of Biosensors - A Practical Approach published in 1990. Edited by two internationally renowned experts in this field, it draws together contributions from active researchers in Europe, North America and Asia. Chapters explain how to implement diverse techniques, such as. protein engineering, optical and electrochemical instrumentation and numerical modelling in the context of produ

Abstract

Sensors are the eyes, ears, and more, of the modern engineered product or system--including the living human organism. This book offers a comprehensive review of biomedical sensors and their associated instrumentation systems now commonly used in modern medicine. Readers will find invaluable data and guidance on a wide variety of sensors used in biomedical applications, from fluid flow sensors, to ultrasound sensors, to chemical analysis sensors. New developments in biomaterials-based sensors that mimic natural biosystems will be covered as well, and the reader will find ample references throughout for further reading and research. Biomedical engineers, medical physicists, electrical engineers, and medical professionals will find state-of-the-art information on: Temperature sensors; Flow sensors for gases and liquids; Ultrasound sensors and chemical sensors for biomedical use; Sensors for both ionizing and nonionizing radiation; New developments in enzyme-based sensors, immune sensors, and microorganism-based sensors.

Abstract

In this monograph, the authors discuss the current progress in the medical application of impedimetric biosensors, along with the key challenges in the field. First, a general overview of biosensor development, structure and function is presented, followed by a detailed discussion of impedimetric biosensors and the principles of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Next, the current state-of-the art in terms of the science and technology underpinning impedance-based biosensors is reviewed in detail. The layer- by-layer construction of impedimetric sensors is described, including the design of electrodes, their nano-modification, transducer surface functionalisation and the attachment of different bioreceptors. The current challenges of translating lab-based biosensor platforms into commercially-available devices that function with real patient samples at the POC are presented; this includes a consideration of systems integration, microfluidics and biosensor regeneration. The final section of this monograph describes case studies of successful impedance-based biosensors for the detection of a range of analytes from small molecules up to whole microorganisms. Finally, the authors put forward future perspectives for the clinical applications of impedimetric biosensors.

Abstract

This book is devoted to new developments in measurement technologies for upstream and downstream bioprocessing. The recent advances in biotechnology and bioprocessing have generated a number of new biological products that require more qualified analytical technologies for diverse process analytical needs. These includes especially fast and sensitive measurement technology that, early in the process train, can inform on critical process parameters related to process economy and product quality and that can facilitate ambitions of designing efficient integrated end-to-end bioprocesses. This book covers these topics as well as analytical monitoring methods based either on real-time or in-line sensor technology, on simple and compact bioanalytical devices, or on the use of advanced data prediction methods.

Abstract

Today anyone can purchase technology that can track, quantify, and measure the body and its environment. Wearable or portable sensors detect heart rates, glucose levels, steps taken, water quality, genomes, and microbiomes, and turn them into electronic data. Is this phenomenon empowering, or a new form of social control? Who volunteers to enumerate bodily experiences, and who is forced to do so? Who interprets the resulting data? How does all this affect the relationship between medical practice and self care, between scientific and lay knowledge? Quantified examines these and other issues that arise when biosensing technologies become part of everyday life. The book offers a range of perspectives, with views from the social sciences, cultural studies, journalism, industry, and the nonprofit world. The contributors consider data, personhood, and the urge to self-quantify; legal, commercial, and medical issues, including privacy, the outsourcing of medical advice, and self-tracking as a "paraclinical" practice; and technical concerns, including interoperability, sociotechnical calibration, alternative views of data, and new space for design.
