This book, based mainly on intense fieldwork and personal investigations carried out by the author over the past twenty years, brings together essays on some prominent defensive works which have been constructed over many centuries across the Indian subcontinent, particularly South India. For each period a selection has been made of outstanding examples of fortification in order to analyse the building techniques, considering the evolution of military technology, particularly the development of artillery, to establish the typology of the structures and to bring into focus a reliable method for identifying and dating defensive works in India. This study, with draws attention to the considerable skills and ingenuities of Indian fort builders, has something to engage the interest of all those concerned with Indian military monuments, be they engineers, archaeologists or historians.

This volume collects five years of studies conducted by various researchers coordinated by the author and describe the different phases of the restoration project and the construction site of Rocca San Silvestro. The restoration project developed in the awareness that the site needed, not just a set of technical operations, but also of a critical act that led to the drafting of a project not only reversible, recognizable and compatible but above all a sustainable restoration. This is to be considered as a moment of confrontation between archaeologists and architects and follows on from the book written by Andrea Arrighetti, Rocca San Silvestro: Archeology for the restoration, published in 2017.

The collection comprises contributions delivered at the colloquium "The Castle as a Technical Issue. Technologies and Forms in the Construction of Mediaeval Fortified Settlements", held at the end of 2007 at the Moravian Museum, Brno, with the participation of archaeologists, architects, anthropologists, and heritage experts. Besides covering the building and historical development of castles, the contributions also concentrate on details of everyday life in mediaeval castles, people's diets, and armour. Much of the attention is dedicated to the context of Skály (Štarkov) Castle near Jimramov. Further contributions involve castles at Cimburk, near Městečko Trnávka and Újezd u Kunštátu, the Silesian-Ostrava Castle, and the Nosislav stronghold.
