Many of us, particularly young consumers, are constantly connected online and increasingly informed by digital media. For the first time, Australians’ use of online news has surpassed traditional offline news sources. In this confusing age of misinformation, how do we make sense of media messages? Media literacy and education are essential tools; we need to be able to tell fact from fiction in news that is rapidly and pervasively generated by multiple sources via websites and digital platforms, including social media. Omgaan met informatie is een onmisbare vaardigheid. De digitale technologie en het internet maakten ons bewust van de grenzeloze hoeveelheid beschikbare informatie. Meer informatie leidt niet altijd tot meer kennis, tenzij we efficient en effectief informatie leren gebruiken en vaardig worden in levenslang leren. In vele opleidingen in het hoger onderwijs wordt nu een cursus ingelast om dit te bevorderen. 

In dit boek wordt de informatie niet zozeer vanuit technisch of bibliografisch oogpunt benaderd, maar eerder vanuit het inzicht dat informatiekunde de logistieke onderbouw is voor een goed kennisbeheer. Net afgestudeerde jongeren zijn massaal op zoek naar werk. Hoe is het gesteld met hun hard skills? Die bezitten ze al. Jongeren zijn meesters in de vakkennis die ze opdoen tijdens hun opleiding. Waar wringt het schoentje dan? Ze schieten tekort insoft skills. Soft skills, de zachte attitude op de werkvloer. In our media-saturated environment, how can we teach students to distinguish true statements from those that are false, misleading, or manipulative?
