In Nederland leven ruim honderdduizend mensen met een verstandelijke beperking. De helft van hen is ernstig beperkt. De groep mensen met een verstandelijke beperking is heterogeen. Onder hen zijn er die al vanaf de geboorte een verstandelijke beperking hebben, bij anderen is deze pas later in het leven opgetreden. Er zijn mensen met zeer ernstige beperkingen die de sociale zelfredzaamheid belemmeren en er zijn er die met enige steun zelfstandig kunnen functioneren. Velen hebben ook bijkomende problemen zoals motorische en/of zintuiglijke beperkingen, psychische stoornissen of gedragsproblemen. Deze veelzijdigheid aan beperkingen en bijkomende problemen betekent dat er door professionals zorg op maat geboden moet worden. In dit boek wordt stilgestaan bij de vele facetten die het werken met mensen met verstandelijke beperkingen kenmerken en hoe de zorg kan worden ingevuld.
