Abstract

The objective of the thesis was to illustrate the trajectory of Iranian nuclear crisis from the origins of the nuclear program to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly referred as the nuclear deal. The guiding thread was the concept of "nuclear ambiguity", which was addressed in the following terms: the civilian-military application of the atom constituted the primary source and was further exacerbated by several loopholes in the non-proliferation regime; Teheran exploited both sources and developed a large program with possible military dimensions. The JCPOA attempted to break this trend by limiting Iran's program only to peaceful goals and by creating an unprecedented inspection mechanism. In other words, it attempted to go beyond the previous history of ambiguity.

Abstract

Chile and its foreign policy: Trance and transition from the Great War to the Cold War (1914-1964) is a collective book that brings together the advances and results of research related to the main problems that characterized Chile's international relations at the regional level. , continental and global from the vision that the Chilean political leaders and diplomats projected as part of a strategy of greater ties with the region and the world in a complex period of transition for Latin American countries. These States had to make decisions that impacted both politics and the economy, this being the main challenge that had to be faced during the time frame considered in the book, where the end of the belle époque, the development and consequences of the I World War, the emergence of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the birth of the League of Nations, the consolidation of European totalitarianism and American hegemony in America, the crisis of 1929, the outbreak of World War II and its end , brought with it the transition to a critical stage for the world, such as the emergence of the Cold War with bipolarity, political and military conflicts, and the latency of nuclear destruction.

Abstract

Arms control and non-proliferation efforts are two of the tools that have occasionally been used to implement U.S. national security strategy. Although some believe these tools do little to restrain the behaviour of U.S. adversaries, while doing too much to restrain U.S. military forces and operations, many other analysts see them as an effective means to promote transparency, case military planning, limit forces, and protect against uncertainty and surprise. Arms control and non-proliferation efforts have produced formal treaties and agreements, informal arrangements, and co-operative threat reduction and monitoring mechanisms. The pace of implementation for many of these agreements slowed during the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration usually preferred unilateral or ad-hoc measures to formal treaties and agreements to address U.S. security concerns. But the Obama Administration resumed bilateral negotiations with Russia and pledged its support for a number of multilateral arms control and non-proliferation efforts. This book provides an overview of the treaties, agreements and control regimes currently in place and relating to co-operative arms control and non-proliferation.

This study explores how a world with numerous nuclear states might function and what it would mean for our present conceptions of deterrence, for the place of the United States in the international order, and for international order itself.
