This is a well written and valuable study of the life of a familiar but still somehow shadowy figure and an important contribution to medieval intellectual history, with insights into the meaning of the twelfth-century renaissance, the monastic mindset, the invention of psychological thought, the birth of the university, and the historiography of the Crusades.

"The monastery of Montier-en-Der, on the border between Champagne and Lorraine, was one of the most important monasteries of the Middle Ages. Its cartulary, put together in the 1120s at the height of the monastery's prestige and wealth, is a crucial source of information for the history of west Francia before the twelfth century and is here published in full for the first time." "Constance Brittain Bouchard begins the edition with a history of the monastery, codicological information on the cartulary and the other manuscripts that contain copies of charters from Montier-en-Der, and a close discussion of the polyptyque and the forged charters found within the cartulary. The Latin text of each charter is preceded by a summary of its contents, including notes identifying place names and individuals. The edition also includes a chronology for the charters, a bibliography of works on the abbey, and several maps. James Grier documents the musical activities of Adémar de Chabannes, eleventh-century monk, historian, homilist and tireless polemicist for the apostolic status of Saint Martial, patron saint of the abbey that bore his name in Limoges. Adémar left behind some 451 folios of music with notation in his autograph hand, a musical resource without equal before the seventeenth century. He introduced, at strategic moments, pieces familiar from the standard liturgy for an apostle and items of his own composition. These reveal Adémar to be a supremely able designer of liturgies and a highly original composer. This study analyses his accomplishments as a musical scribe, compiler of liturgies, editor of existing musical works and composer; it also offers a speculative consideration of his abilities as a singer; and finally, it places Adémar's musical activities in the context of liturgical, musical and political developments at the abbey of Saint Martial in Limoges.
