Abstract

This book concerns a rapidly developing area of science that deals with the behavior of porous media saturated by fluids. Three basic aspects of this field are rather uniformly balanced in the book; namely, complex physical mechanisms of processes in porous media, new mathematical models, and numerical methods of process study. The following topics are included: homogenization and up-scaling of flow through heterogeneous media; micro-structural laws of complex flow at the pore scale; flow with phase transition and chemical reactions in porous media; wave propagation in saturated porous media;

Abstract

Porous materials (such as zeolites, clay minerals, and assemblies of oxide nanoparticles) are of great importance for the progress of many technological and environmental fields, such as catalysis, adsorption, separation, and ion exchange, because of their unique pore topologies, tunable structures, and the possibility of introducing active reaction sites. The major goal of this Special Issue was to provide a platform for scientists to discuss new insights in the stability, structure, and properties of porous materials, as well as in innovative aspects of their processing and applications. The emphasis was given as the relationships between the structure and/or chemical composition and the specific physical properties of these materials, as well as their role in mineralogical, technological, green, and sustainable processes. In this Special Issue of Minerals, we provide an up-to-date selection of high-quality original and review papers concerning the physical, chemical, and structural characterization of porous materials, the synthesis of crystalline phases with pores in the appropriate range, structure-property relationships at ambient conditions, but also at high temperatures and/or at high pressures, adsorption, and diffusion of mobile species in porous materials, host-guest interactions and confinement effects, ion exchange, modeling in geological and environmental processes, and new insights in processing and applications. In total, eight topical contributions reflect both the diversity and interdisciplinary of modern mineralogy, bridging together experimentalists and computational approaches.

Abstract

The Second IUPAC Symposium on the Characterization of Porous Solids (COPS-II) provided the opportunity for detailed discussion and appraisal of the most important techniques currently used for the characterization of porous materials, especially those of technological importance. The 82 selected papers and reviews contained in this volume are mainly concerned with the theoretical and experimental aspects of adsorption, fluid penetration, small-angle scattering and spectroscopic methods with their application in the study of adsorbents, catalysts, constructional materials, etc. Particular atten

Abstract

The objectives of the Third IUPAC Symposium on the Characterization of Porous Solids (COPS-III) were (1) to provide the opportunity for specialists to exchange ideas and new information on theoretical principles and methodology and (2) to generate proposals for the comparison and utilization of the many techniques now available for the characterization of porous solids. A successful outcome of the Symposium has been the final report of the IUPAC Subcommittee on Recommendations for the Characterization of Porous Solids, a summary of which is given in these proceedings. Abstract

Advances in Porous Media, Volume 3 presents in-depth review papers that give a comprehensive coverage of the field of transport in porous media. This is the third volume in the series which treats transport phenomena in porous media as an interdisciplinary topic. The objective of each chapter is to review the work done on a specific topic including theoretical, numerical as well as experimental studies. All contributors are from a variety of backgrounds, such as civil and environmental engineering, earth and environmental sciences. The articles are aimed at scientists and engineers fr

Abstract

Poroelasticity is a continuum theory for the analysis of a porous media consisting of an elastic matrix containing interconnected fluid-saturated pores. In physical terms the theory postulates that when a porous material is subjected to stress, the resulting matrix deformation leads to volumetric changes in the pores. This book is devoted to the analysis of fluid-saturated poroelastic beams, columns and plates made of materials for which diffusion in the longitudinal direction(s) is viable, while in the perpendicular direction(s) the flow can be considered negligible because of the micro-
