"The purpose of Key Approaches to Biblical Ethics is to address fundamental as well as practical questions of methodology in examining the ethical material of the Bible. Sixteen scholars of international reputation, most of them leaders in the field of biblical ethics, discuss questions of biblical interpretation from the perspectives of the Hebrew Bible and New Testament ethics in close dialogue with one another. In the present volume both established and new approaches to biblical ethics are presented and discussed. The result is a volume of unprecedented scholarly interaction that provides key insights into issues of biblical ethics that play a significant role both for biblical interpretation as well as for methodological questions in Jewish and Christian ethics today"--

Endorses the pursuit of paradigm shifts in our understandings of faith, truth, and nature to remedy the "underside" of modernity and thus to inaugurate a post-modern (but not anti-modern) and post-secular (but not anti-secular) view of the world.

"By the last 3 decades, consistent scientific research has proved that the spiritual-religious dimension is strongly related to human health. Since then, this field and its applications are progressively growing and developing, through: psycho-neuro-immunological-endocrine research; curricular disciplines on medical schools; the bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach as standard for patient-centered integrative healthcare; complementary therapies derived from spiritual traditions became valuable allies; hospitals developing policies to respect spiritual values and necessities; faith-based interventions cooperating with psychosocial initiatives. Each of these movements meets the patients' demands for a comprehensive healthcare with a human approach. However, most healthcare professionals were not educated within the view derived from recent research associating religiosity and health. At the other hand, clergymen tend to receive little or none information about health issues during their theological graduation. Notwithstanding progress in including the religious dimension in the clinical context, there are still many significant obstacles for a real transformation. In this context, "An Examination of Religiosity - Influences, Perspectives and Health Implications" aspires to disseminate the ideal form of clinical healthcare, based on the best available scientific evidence. This work does not have the goal of being exhaustive, but rather aims to be a reliable reference to accompany a paradigm shift. The chapters are original manuscripts of high-standard methodological quality, selected among authors from Austria, Brazil, Egypt, Poland, and the United States. The book starts with a historical trajectory and the current state-of-the-art of spirituality-religiosity as a clinical therapeutic resource. The following chapters explore the relationships between spirituality and religiosity in the areas of physical and mental health in many populations and groups: the general population, college students, older adults, cancer patients, and bereaved parents. The final chapters bring intriguing and challenging models about phenomena involving the nonlocal mind and the brain-independent consciousness"--

This book provides a full treatment of an issue which is particularly pressing: when the claims of the nearest (e.g. parents, children, spouses, friends) conflict with the claims of the neediest, as they constantly do, where should preference go? Professor Hallett focuses first on a specific, representative case, pitting the lesser need of a son against the greater need of starving strangers. He brings to bear on this single paradigm all the resources of theological and philosophical reflection - scriptures, patristic teaching, the Thomistic tradition, current debates - and from this single example he sheds light on a wide range of comparable cases, both private and public. This distinctive strategy leads to distinctive and challenging results, and at the same time helps to clarify the traditional 'order of charity' and the celebrated 'preferential option for the poor'.

Robin Gill argues that once moral communities (such as churchgoers) take centre stage in ethics - as they do in virtue ethics - then there should be a greater interest in sociological evidence about these communities. This book, first published in 1999, examines evidence gathered from social attitude surveys about church communities, in particular their views on faith, moral order and love. It shows that churchgoers are distinctive in their attitudes and behaviour. Some of their attitudes change over time, and there are a number of obvious moral disagreements between different groups of churchgoers. Nonetheless, there are broad patterns of Christian beliefs, teleology and altruism which distinguish churchgoers as a whole from non-churchgoers. However, the values, virtues, moral attitudes and behaviour of churchgoers are shared by many other people as well. The distinctiveness of church communities in the modern world is thus real but relative, and is crucial for the task of Christian ethics.

In the immediate future we are likely to witness significant developments in human genetic science. It is therefore of critical importance that Christian ethics engages with the genetics debate, since it affects not just the way we perceive ourselves and the natural world, but also has wider implications for our society. This book considers ethical issues arising out of specific practices in human genetics, including genetic screening, gene patenting, gene therapy, genetic counselling as well as feminist concerns. Genetics and Christian Ethics argues for a particular theo-ethical approach that derives from a modified version of virtue ethics, drawing particularly on a Thomistic understanding of the virtues, especially prudence or practical wisdom and justice. The book demonstrates that a theological voice is highly relevant to contested ethical debates about genetics.
