Abstract

Abstract

With reference to gender preference, racial and social profiling, immigration policies, and the adjudication of borderland cultures and hybrid identities, this collection offers an in-depth examination of Enlightenment society and its parallels in the contemporary world."--Pub. desc. Featuring an internationally renowned group of contributors, this volume looks at the concept of tolerance at the point where the individual, or group, converges or clashes with the state. Though it appears to provide grist for the mill of Enlightenment critics such as Adorno, Horkheimer, Foucault, and MacIntyre by confronting specific cases in which individual freedoms are forced to acquiesce to state control and authority in the guise of tolerance, the essays also offer a cautionary tale of critical restraint in the post-9/11 world. By reflecting on similar discrepancies in the interplay of discourses of tolerance and intolerance that inform our own lives, we recognize attempts to craft and apply theories and practices of toleration. "The idea of tolerance is one of the most enduring legacies of the Enlightenment. However, there is a surprising lack of scholarly works that attempt to analyse the influence of tolerance on the individual during this period. This collection assesses, for the first time, the positive and negative impact of discourses and theories of tolerance upon the lives of individuals in eighteenth-century Europe.

Abstract

In this 2002 book, Anna Elisabetta Galeotti examines the most intractable problems which toleration encounters and argues that what is really at stake is not religious or moral disagreement but the unequal status of different social groups. Liberal theories of toleration fail to grasp this and consequently come up with normative solutions that are inadequate when confronted with controversial cases. Galeotti proposes, as an alternative, toleration as recognition, which addresses the problem of according equal respect to groups as well as equal liberty to individuals. She offers an interpretation that is both a revision and an expansion of liberal theory, in which toleration constitutes an important component not only of a theory of justice, but also of the politics of identity. Her study will appeal to a wide range of readers in political philosophy, political theory, and law.

Abstract

Offering fresh perspectives on perennial questions of ethnicity, race, nationalism, and religion, Rogers Brubaker analyzes three forces that shape the politics of diversity and multiculturalism today: inequality as a public concern, biology as an asserted basis of racial and ethnic difference, and religion as a key terrain of public contestation.

Abstract

Supervision, health-monitoring, fault detection, fault diagnosis and fault management play an increasing role for technical processes and vehicles, in order to improve reliability, availability, maintenance and life-time. For safety-related processes fault-tolerant systems with redundancy are required in order to reach comprehensive system integrity. This book gives an introduction into the field of fault detection, fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant systems with methods which have proven their performance in practical applications. It guides the reader in a structured tutorial style: supervision methods, reliability, safety, system integrity and related terminology; fault detection with signal-based methods for periodic and stochastic signals; fault detection with process model-based methods like parameter estimation, state estimation, parity equations and principal component analysis; fault diagnosis with classification and inference methods; fault-tolerant systems with hardware and analytical redundancy; many practical simulation examples and experimental results for processes like electrical motors, pumps, actuators, sensors and automotive components; end-of-chapter exercises for self testing or for practice. The book is dedicated to graduate students of electrical, mechanical, chemical engineering and computer science and for practising engineers.

Abstract

Converso and Morisco are the terms applied to those Jews and Muslims who converted to Christianity in large numbers and usually under duress in late medieval Spain. The Converso and Morisco Studies publications will examine the implications of these mass conversions for the converts themselves, for their heirs (also referred to as Conversos and Moriscos) and for medieval and modern Spanish culture. As the essays in this first volume attest, the study of the Converso and Morisco phenomena is not only important for those scholars focused on Spanish society and culture, but for academics everywhere interested in the issues of identity, Otherness, nationalism, religious intolerance and the challenges of modernity. Contributors are Michel Boeglin, William Childers, Barbara Fuchs, Mercedes García-Arenal, Juan Gil, Luis M. Girón-Negrón, Kevin Ingram, Francisco Márquez Villanueva, Mark D. Meyerson, Vincent Parello, Francisco Peña Fernández, Fernando Rodríguez Mediano, Elaine Wertheimer, Nadia Zeldes, and Leonor Zozaya Montes.
