Het beheer van afval betekent een belangrijke kostenpost voor iedere organisatie. Bovendien is het beheer van afval onderworpen aan allerlei wet- en regelgeving, op Europees, federaal en Vlaams niveau. Kennis van zaken bij het bepalen van de strategie voor afvalbeheer is dan ook een absolute must voor elke milieuprofessional. Deze bijdrage levert ons een beter inzicht in de werking van de private spelers in een competitieve markt waar van afval nieuwe grondstoffen worden gemaakt. The need for efficient and sustainable management methods of mine waste is continuously growing all around the world. These waste products often present serious management problems due to their more or less significant amounts and possible environmental threats. This Special Issue highlights the recent and new trends in sustainable mine waste management techniques. Currently, it is essential to sustainably manage mine waste, considering social, economic, environmental and technical aspects. In this Special Issue, insights related to the following issues are highlighted: the problems around mine waste, the fine characterization of mine waste, the latest available technical and environmental solutions to efficiently manage mine waste, including treatment and processing before disposal and high value element recovery, with the view of moving towards defining effective, low-cost and ecofriendly methods, the recycling of mine waste products as alternative resources in different sectors, and finally laboratory, pilot and/or industrial-scale studies related to these topics of research. Scientists and industry and governance stakeholders have to face these new challenges to find the best management practices for the future.

Anaerobic digestion is by far the most important technology for providing clean renewable energy to millions of people in rural areas around the world. It produces biomethane with anaerobic-digestate as a byproduct that can be used as a biofertilizer. In the context of energy consumption, more than 85% of the total energy consumed currently comes from non-renewable fossil resources. A wide variety of biowastes can be used as feedstocks for biogas production. Biogas technology can provide sustainable, affordable, and eco-friendly green energy along with useful byproducts. This book discusses the basics of biogas production and aims to address the needs of graduate and postgraduate students as well as other professionals through further evaluation of biogas production via case studies.

This book is dedicated to the reuse of waste and residues from the agricultural sector. Plant residues, as well as animal manure and residues from animal breeding, contain useful elements that can be processed for production of fertilizers, compost for soil recultivation, and biofuels. The emerging energy and resources crisis calls for development of sustainable reuse of waste and residues. This book contains eight chapters divided into four sections. The first section contains the introductory chapter from the editor. The second section is related to the preparation of fertilizers and compost for soil amelioration from agricultural residues and waste water. The third section considers the use of agricultural waste for solid biofuels and biogas. The fourth section discusses sustainability and risk assessment related to the use of agricultural waste and residues.

This book deals with several aspects of waste material recycling. It is divided into three sections. The first section explains the roles of stakeholders, both informal and formal sectors, in post-consumer waste activities. It also discusses waste collection programs for recycling. The second section discusses the analysis tools for recycling system. The third section focuses on the recycling process and optimal production. I hope that this book will convey both the need and means for recycling and resource conservation activities to a wide readership, at both academician and professional level, and contribute to the creation of a sound material-cycle society.
