By analyzing Warsaw’s Yiddish daily press, this volume reveals how Polish Jews gained and disseminated subversive knowledge of National Socialist Germany in spite of censorship and repression, and also initiated campaigns of protest and solidarity to the benefit of the people being persecuted there. Polnische Juden stellten nicht nur die größte Gruppe unter den Opfern des Holocaust, in den 1930er Jahren hatte auch kein Land Europas mehr jüdische Einwohner und einen vielfältigeren jüdischen Printmarkt als Polen. Die Studie trägt zu einem Paradigmenwechsel bei, der diese Tatsachen stärker berücksichtigt, indem er den Blick von Ost nach West richtet und die polnischen Juden nicht länger als monolithischen Block passiver Opfer begreift, sondern als handelnde Subjekte, die den Antisemitismus, der sie bedrohte, aktiv bekämpften. Aufbauend auf einer Analyse der Berichterstattung der jiddischen Warschauer Tagespresse über Nationalsozialismus und Judenverfolgung legt sie die Netzwerke der jüdischen Zeitungsmacher frei und zeigt, wie diese sich trotz Zensur und Repression subversives Wissen aneigneten, es ihrem Publikum vermittelten und so die Vorstellungswelten polnischer Juden über Deutschland prägten sowie Protest- und Solidaritätsaktionen zugunsten der Verfolgten initiierten.

Inwiefern sind Fortschritte im Bereich der Naturphilosophie des 13. Jahrhunderts in deutschen literarischen Texten wiederzufinden? Am Beispiel der Lehre zu den vier Elementen setzt sich diese Arbeit zum Ziel, die Punkte der Vernetzung von Literatur und zeitgenössischem Allgemeinwissen auszumachen und die Frage nach dessen Funktion und wissenspoetologischer Relevanz zu beantworten. Literatur, die ja in erster Linie der Unterhaltung dient und abseits der lateinischen Gelehrsamkeit verortet ist, muss sich, so die These, anderer Mechanismen als des Kommentars oder der Abhandlung bedienen, um auf gelehrte Inhalte zu rekurrieren. Diese Mechanismen gilt es auszumachen und auf deren mögliche gattungs- und textüberschreitende Verwendung hin zu überprüfen. Die Analyse zeigt, dass naturphilosophische Inhalte über populärwissenschaftliche Verweise sowie textorganisierende oder metaphorische Verwendung Eingang in volkssprachliche Texte finden. Für die Lektüre mittelhochdeutscher Literatur gilt, dass gelehrtes Wissen das Verständnis schwieriger Textpassagen durchaus erleichtern kann und sich auch für weitgehend erforschte Texte noch neue und erhellende Lesarten ergeben können.

This open access book is interdisciplinary and provides cross-sectoral and multi-dimensional exploration of sustainable development and transportation in South Africa. Drawing on work from different disciplines, the book contributes not only to academia but also seeks to inform urban and regional policy with the view of contributing to the national aspirations of South Africa as espoused in the National Development Plan (NDP), 2030, National Spatial Development Framework (NSDF) Draft (2019), National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy (NCASS) Draft (2019), Green Transport Strategy for South Africa (2018–2050), and National Transportation Plan (NATMAP), 2050. Adopting a multi-dimensional assessment, the book provides a background for co-production concerning climate change, sustainable development, and transportation in the Global South. The book contributes in its analysis of the institutional and legislative framework that relates to the climate change, skills and knowledge transfer, sustainable development, and transportation in South Africa, as these are responsible for the evolution of the green economy and transport sector in the country. The connections among different sectors and issues such as environment, transport modes, technology innovation, vehicle management and emission control, skills and knowledge transfer, legislative and policy framework, and the wider objectives of the sustainable development goals (SDGs), especially goals 11 to 13.
