Dans la conquête comme dans l’exercice du pouvoir, la communication occupe aujourd’hui une place cruciale. Chaînes d’information continue, réseaux sociaux, cotes de popularité, emballements médiatiques et stratégies d’influence des groupes de pression sont le nouvel horizon de l’activité politique. Si l’éloquence et le maniement ritualisé des symboles y sont toujours de mise, « bien communiquer » est devenu un impératif absolu dans les sociétés de l’information… voire de la sur-information. Ce manuel expose tout d’abord le mouvement historique au terme duquel l’espace public, les médias de masse et la mesure de l’opinion sont devenus un enjeu central du jeu politique. En s’attachant à les remettre en contexte, il présente ensuite les évolutions d’une science de la communication politique née au croisement de la recherche universitaire, de la publicité des affaires politiques et de l’économie des médias. Enfin, il propose de suivre l’invention puis la consécration de nouveaux « métiers » – des spin doctors aux community managers – dans la division du travail politique.
