L'attrait qu'exercent les œuvres d'art sur les voleurs peut, de prime abord, surprendre. Le vol d'œuvres d'art connaît cependant un développement important. Afin de le comprendre, les causes de l'engouement dont les œuvres d'art sont l'objet ainsi que les différents protagonistes du marché de l'art seront évoqués. Le vol d'œuvres d'art sera d'abord analysé d'un point de vue quantitatif à travers les statistiques. Il s'agira ensuite de comprendre les raisons qui poussent une personne à voler une œuvre d'art et, suivant une perspective historique, d'envisager les développements que le vol d'œuvres d'art a connus. Les récits de vie de différents voleurs nous feront connaître leur univers et leur " métier ". Toutefois, les voleurs ne seraient rien s'ils n'avaient la possibilité d'écouler leur marchandise. Le rôle du receleur nous permettra donc de découvrir les différents réseaux de distribution des objets volés. On examinera enfin la position qu'occupe le vol d'œuvres d'art par rapport aux autres formes de criminalité. Celles-ci sont principalement le trafic de drogues, le trafic d'armes et le blanchiment d'argent.
