Cet ouvrage est né dans la foulée du renouveau spectaculaire qu'ont connu les sciences de la mission au cours de ces dernières années. Il répond au vœu d'un nombre toujours croissant de lecteurs de disposer d'ouvrages maniables, donnant un accès commode à certaines notions clés clairement définies. Ces cent mots, soigneusement choisis, indiquent que ce dictionnaire tient plus du lexique que de l'encyclopédie. Editeurs et auteurs ont pris conscience d'une carence particulière de l'aire francophone en la matière. La parution récente de dictionnaires sur la mission dans plusieurs pays voisins, de langues anglaise, allemande et italienne, rendait ce manque encore plus perceptible. Plus modestement, cet instrument de travail qui se présente lui-même légitimement comme " un témoignage commun ", voudrait être une interpellation. Plus que jamais, la mission et son étude devraient reprendre leur place centrale, que le christianisme reconnaît comme " constitutive " de la théologie et de la vie des Eglises comme de la spiritualité des individus et des communautés. A-t-elle jamais cessé d'être le moteur de l'œcuménisme ? L'analyse des implications de la mission au sein des grandes cultures mondiales exige le recours à toutes les sciences de l'homme, en premier lieu à l'anthropologie, à la linguistique et à l'histoire, dans la plus grande pluridisciplinarité : le large éventail de cette centaine d'entrées le montre amplement.

Pas de société sans rites, mais dans la nôtre ils sont souvent déchus, sclérosés, folklorisés. Pourtant, là aussi se cache sans doute une réserve de sens. Pour le comprendre il faudrait une pluralité d'approches. Celles retenues dans ce volume, fruit d'une session théologique tenue en mars 1995 à l'École des sciences philosophiques et religieuses des Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis, peuvent y introduire. L'anthropologue voit surgir ce que le rite opère : tisser ou restaurer des liens vitaux. L'exégète mesure la différence des rituels chrétiens, dont la référence inclut essentiellement la mémoire de l'événement libérateur. Le sociologue montre la persistance du champ rituel dans la religiosité dite populaire et le bricolage des « liturgies séculières ». Le théologien souligne la tension entre l'extériorité des rites et la responsabilité personnelle. L'indicatif de l'action rituelle tend vers l'impératif de l'éthique.

L'origine de la vie et l'évolution des espèces ont toujours agité les esprits. Certains animaux peuvent-ils surgir du néant, comme le croyaient les adeptes de la génération spontanée? L'homme est-il un produit du hasard et d'une sélection naturelle, comme le pensent aujourd'hui les biologistes darwiniens? Une vague odeur de soufre plane encore sur ces questions difficiles. Un simple coup de pouce d'un créateur omniscient ne suffirait-il pas à les résoudre? La tentation d'hybrider la science et la religion n'est pas nouvelle. Elle motive aujourd'hui des mouvements tels que le créationnisme et, aux États-Unis, l'" Intelligent Design". Présente bien avant Darwin et sa théorie de l'évolution, elle resurgit régulièrement tel un infatigable serpent de mer. Chacune de ses réapparitions est l'occasion d'opposer à nouveau la raison et la foi, deux domaines moins étanches qu'on ne le croit - en tout cas assez équitablement visités par les vieux démons de l'intolérance.
