Can we remember other people's memories? The Generation of Postmemory argues we can: that memories of traumatic events live on to mark the lives of those who were not there to experience them. Children of survivors and their contemporaries inherit catastrophic histories not through direct recollection but through haunting postmemories—multiply mediated images, objects, stories, behaviors, and affects passed down within the family and the culture at large. In these new and revised critical readings of the literary and visual legacies of the Holocaust and other, related sites of memory, Marianne Hirsch builds on her influential concept of postmemory. The book's chapters, two of which were written collaboratively with the historian Leo Spitzer, engage the work of postgeneration artists and writers such as Art Spiegelman, W.G. Sebald, Eva Hoffman, Tatana Kellner, Muriel Hasbun, Anne Karpff, Lily Brett, Lorie Novak, David Levinthal, Nancy Spero and Susan Meiselas. Grappling with the ethics of empathy and identification, these artists attempt to forge a creative postmemorial aesthetic that reanimates the past without appropriating it. In her analyses of their fractured texts, Hirsch locates the roots of the familial and affiliative practices of postmemory in feminism and other movements for social change. Using feminist critical strategies to connect past and present, words and images, and memory and gender, she brings the entangled strands of disparate traumatic histories into more intimate contact. With more than fifty illustrations, her text enables a multifaceted encounter with foundational and cutting edge theories in memory, trauma, gender, and visual culture, eliciting a new understanding of history and our place in it.

Het verhaal van Linda Polman over het Europese 'vluchtelingenmanagement' begint in de zomer van 1938 in het statige Franse kuuroord Evian, bij de eerste internationale top over de vluchtelingencrisis in Europa. Het aantal Joden dat uit nazi-gebied probeerde te ontkomen was geëxplodeerd: er waren dringend opvangplaatsen nodig. Alle argumenten van West-Europese regeringen om de vluchtelingen níét binnen te laten waren dezelfde als nu: de 'migranten' zouden niet stroken met nationale normen en waarden, banen en huizen willen afpakken en de cohesie in de samenleving bedreigen. Het enige wat de conferentie opleverde was de hoon van nazi-Duitsland: 'Niemand wil ze hebben' kopte een Duitse krant triomfantelijk.Polman onderzoekt de ontwikkeling van het Europese vluchtelingenbeleid sinds 1938. De reis gaat van Evian, naar de na-oorlogse kampen in West-Europa voor vluchtelingen vanachter het IJzeren Gordijn, via de 'veilige enclaves' op de Balkan in de jaren negentig, naar de megavluchtelingenkampen op het Afrikaanse continent, waar de UNHCR Europa's 'containmentbeleid' implementeert, het 'inkapselen' van het vluchtelingenprobleem. De reis eindigt op het Griekse Lesbos, het epicentrum van de grootste Europese vluchtelingencrisis sinds 1938. Wat is er terechtgekomen van de belofte van 'nooit meer' waarop het VN-vluchtelingenverdrag in 1951 was gebaseerd? Tachtig jaar Europees vluchtelingenbeleid en nog steeds wil niemand ze hebben. Onderzoeksjournaliste Linda Polman schreef in 2008 het geruchtmakende 'De crisiskaravaan', over de duistere achterkant van de internationale humanitaire hulpoperaties in oorlogsgebieden. Ze maakte internationale furore met haar boek, het verscheen in tien landen. Ze is ook auteur van het veel geprezen ''k Zag Twee Beren', over de VN-vredesmissies in Rwanda, Somalië en Haïti.Ze woonde en werkte vele jaren als freelance correspondent in o.m. West-Afrika. Pt. 2 (pp. 179-497), "De intolerande stad? (ca. 1930-1940)", describes how xenophobia developed in Antwerp in the 1930s. Relates the rise and activities of Belgian nationalistic organizations, and their antisemitism. Pt. 3 (pp. 487-732), "De bezette stad (1940-1944)", relates that 65% of Antwerp's Jews were deported by the Nazis, compared with 45% overall in Belgium. Relates the process of persecution and deportation of the Jews, the cooperation of the police, the lack of reaction of the authorities, and the role of the bystanders who witnessed the crimes and did not protest; notes that there was a general absence of active resistance. Discusses, also, the rescue activities of individuals and groups.
