Abstract

"One of the most fascinating aspects of Rembrandt's extraordinary artistic career is his suite of brooding, pensive half-length images of religious figures from the late 1650s and early 1660s. The men and women in these portraits peer out of the dark recesses of dimly lit interiors as though burdened by the weight of their spiritual and emotional concerns." "This illustrated catalogue, which accompanies an exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art, brings together seventeen of these majestic paintings. Many have been identified as images of apostles and evangelists, but among them are also representations of Christ and the Virgin, as well as saints and monks. The juxtaposition of these paintings in Rembrandt's Late Religious Portraits raises questions about their relationships to each other and, in a broader sense, to Rembrandt's life and career."--Jacket.

Abstract

This volume is a rare chance to see his exquisite painting by Rembrandt van Rijn alongside a selection of the artist's treatments of other biblical episodes, and works by his contemporaries. Rembrandt took an unusual and personal approach to biblical subjects, exploring the nature of divine encounter and the complexities of its representation, making use of the viewer's knowledge of the subject whilst finding ways to bring the familiar to life.

Abstract

Rembrandt's Light brings together paintings, etchings and drawings that focus on Rembrandt's mastery of visual storytelling through light, concentrating on the period from 1639-58, when he lived in his 'dream house' on the Breestraat in the heart of Amsterdam (today the Rembrandt House Museum). The rooms on the first floor of the house, with their large windows and exceptional quality of light, offered new possibilities for the creation of art. Arranged thematically the book traces Rembrandt's innovation: from evoking a meditative mood, to lighting people, to creating impact and drama. Highlights include 'The Denial of St Peter', 'Pilgrims at Emmaus' and three of the artist's most famous images of women: 'A Woman Bathing in a Stream', 'A Woman in Bed' and 'Girl at a Window'. Published to coincide with an exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery, and the celebrations taking place throughout Europe to mark 350 years since the artist's death (1669), Rembrandt's Light aims to refresh the way we look at works by this incomparable Dutch Master.

Abstract

The Dutch Golden Age of painting spawned some of history's greatest artists and artisans, but few can boast the genius and legacy of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669). Despite never leaving his native Netherlands, Rembrandt projected his oeuvre past the boundaries of his own experience, producing some of art's most diverse and impactful works across portraiture, biblical, allegorical, landscape, and genre scenes. In all their forms, Rembrandt's paintings are built of intricacies-the totality of each subtle facial wrinkle, gaze, or figure amounting to an emotional force that stands unmatched among his contemporaries and artistic progeny alike. Each work is imbued with human feeling. Biblical scenes, like Bathsheba at her Bath, become vehicles for meditations on human longing, probing depths beyond that which is canonized in scripture or depicted in other representations. His portraits, be them of wealthy patrons or tradesmen, communicate the essence of an individual through fine demarcations, their faces bathed in an ethereal light against darkened earthtones. Perhaps most striking, his series of self-portraits are a triumph of the medium; beginning in his youth and spanning until a year prior to his death, Rembrandt's self portraiture is an intimate glimpse into his lifelong process of self-reflection. On the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the artist's death and released in tandem with an exhibition of unprecedented scale at the Rijksmuseum, this XXL monograph compiles all 330 of Rembrandt's paintings in stunning reproductions. From Belshazzar's Feast to The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, we discover Rembrandt's painted oeuvre like never before.

Abstract

Rembrandt's drawings display his emotional state with a candor unseen in other works. They function as a repository for his unfiltered feelings and perspectives of the world that surrounded him. Be it through haunting sketches of his first wife in the grips of a fatal case of tuberculosis, simple scenes of street life, or studies of elephants and tigers, Rembrandt communicates his feverish thirst for images, and his ability to represent these through the lens of his immediate emotional state. Commemorating the 350th anniversary of the artist's death and published in tandem with an exhibition at the Rijksmuseum of unprecedented scale, this stunning XXL monograph is the complete collection of Rembrandt's works on paper. Through the 700 drawings, brilliantly printed in color for the first time, and 313 etchings in pristine reproduction, we explore Rembrandt's keen eye, deft hand, and boundless depth of feeling like never before; and above all, we witness that he was far more than just a painter.
