The visual legacy of early modern cardinals constitutes a vast and extremely rich body of artworks, many of superb quality, in a variety of media, often by well-known artists and skilled craftsmen. Yet cardinal portraits have primarily been analyzed within biographical studies of the represented individual, in relation to the artists who created them, or within the broader genre of portraiture. Portrait Cultures of the Early Modern Cardinal addresses questions surrounding the production, collection, and status of the cardinal portrait, covering diverse geographies and varied media. Examining the development of cardinals' imagery in terms of their multi-layered identities, this volume considers portraits of 'princes of the Church' as a specific cultural phenomenon reflecting cardinals' unique social and political position.

A fresh consideration of the images of saints and martyrs Rubens created for the churches of Flanders and the Holy Roman Empire that offers a masterly demonstration of Rubens' achievements, liberating their message from the secular misunderstandings of the post-religious age and showing them in their intended light.

"The authors present prayer-nuts and small-scale boxwood carvings of different collections and highlight their function as private devotional objects and collector's items. They discuss prints used as models for Late Gothic and Early Renaissance miniature carvings and sculptures and present new material about the historical perception of such objects. This book contains the papers of a colloquium organised by the Abegg-Stiftung in 2012, with contributions by R. Falkenburg, E.M. Kavaler, J.C. Smith, I. Veldman et al'--

Emotions, Art, and Christianity in the Transatlantic World, 1450-1800 is a collection of studies variously exploring the role of visual and material culture in shaping early modern emotional experiences. The volume's transatlantic framework moves from The Netherlands, Spain, and Italy to Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, and the Philippines, and centers on visual culture as a means to explore how emotions differ in their local and global "contexts" amidst the many shifts occurring c. 1450-1800. These themes are examined through the lens of art informed by religious ideas, especially Catholicism, with each essay probing how religiously inflected art stimulated, molded, and encoded emotions. Contributors include: Elena FitzPatrick Sifford, Alison C. Fleming, Natalia Keller, Walter S. Melion, Olaya Sanfuentes, Patricia Simons, Dario Velandia Onofre, and Charles M. Rosenberg.

"Often considered as the first phenomenon of mass media in history, the use of books and prints by Protestants has been widely studied and has generated a rich and plentiful bibliography. In contrast, the production and use of these supports by the partisans of the Counter-Reformation have not received the attention they deserve, especially in the context of the Low Countries. The twelve contributors provide new perspectives on the efficacy of the handpress book industry to support the Catholic strategy of the Spanish Low Countries and underlines the mutually beneficial relationship between proponents of the Counter-Reformation and the typographic world. It is therefore also an important contribution to our understanding of sociocultural and socioeconomic background of the Catholic Netherlands"--

"The Dutch Republic was officially Calvinist, yet large portions of the population did not belong to the Reformed confession. Catholics, too, influenced society, art, and culture in important ways. This book's essays, originally presented at an international conference at Frankfurt's Städel Museum, draw from a range of methodologies to examine the significance of images and objects to Catholics from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. The various media and contexts under discussion bring to light the expansive communicative space of the Catholic image. Nuanced consideration of both confessionally specific and interdenominational factors yields a deeper understanding of the complexity and multifaceted character of the art of the northern Netherlands." --
