By exploring the evolution of the Medici family's villas, "Cultivating the Renaissance" charts the shifting politics, philosophy and aesthetics of the age and chronicles the rise of an extraordinary family from obscure farmers to european royalty. From the fourteenth to the eighteenth century, the Medici family fominated european life. While promoting both arts and sciences, the Medici helped create a new style of architecture, present a new idea of villa life and promote the novel idea of living in harmony with nature. Used variously for pleasure and sports, scholarly and amorous liaisons, commercial entreprise and botanical experimentation, their villas both expressed and influenced contemporary ideas on politics, philosophy, art and design. Each patron's public interests and private passions, as welle as the architects, artists and philosophers they employed, are examined. Through a chronological approach, this book reveals how the villas were used, their reception by contemporary commentators, their legacy and their current state five centuries after they were first built. Lavishly illustrated, "Cultivating the Renaissance" is of great interest to students and scholars of architecture, horticulutre, landscape history, philosophy, art and the history of the Renaissance in Italy.

This volume investigates the origins of one of the most important notions of contemporary society: privacy. Based on case studies from the early modern Low Countries, privacy is tackled from various historical perspectives: social and cultural history, and the history of art and architecture. The Dutch Republic is well known for its financial success, which went hand in hand with the development of a distinguished bourgeois culture and religious toleration. The accumulation of wealth among the urban population led to changes in various spheres, from daily life to art. Privacy, as a concept, started to develop in this period. Indeed, new ideas about housing with the invention of corridors, separate rooms that could be locked, and the separation of the ‘common’ and the ‘private’ space, all illustrate the growing importance of privacy in this geographical area. This volume traces perspectives on early modern privacy and private life based on primary sources in several domains: letters, diaries, and poems; genre painting in art; communal life as illustrated by the Jewish community; and finally, the homes of the Dutch elite. The essays in this volume make a key contribution to the emergence of early modern privacy studies as a research field, and to the ongoing discussion of privacy in the Low Countries. Equally, these case studies can serve as models for the analysis of privacy in other European contexts.

'Visual artists should dwell like kings and gods: how else are they to build and decorate for kings and gods?' (Goethe, Wilhelm Meister's Journeyman Years II, 8). - What applies to Goethe himself in a figurative sense, shall be discussed here in respect to the visual artist in Early Modern Europe up to 1800: Exceptional artists - such as Goethe - but also Mantegna, Dürer, Michelangelo, Rubens, Rembrandt or the Asam Brothers, have, now and then, lived in stately homes and almost princely dwellings. But does this observation apply to the European artist of the pre-modern era in general? This volume takes a fresh look at the artist's home from varying perspectives. From the perspective of social topography, the first question to be raised is: What factors were the most influential in respect to the choice of the location: The residential era, or neighborhood, the proximity to possible clients, or to prestigious places for sales such as centrally located squares, prominent streets, or significant churches? From the perspective of art history and cultural studies, the architecture and its furnishings, the iconography and iconology of sculptural and pictorial programs of artists' houses will be discussed."
