Kerk en katholieken tooiden zich in de 19e eeuw bij voorkeur met een neogotisch kleedje. Rijkelijk beschilderde kerkinterieurs, neomiddeleeuwse kastelen, colleges en gildehuizen, fonkelend edelsmeedwerk, kleurrijke heiligenprentjes en kostelijke vlaggen ... dat was de katholieke neogotiek, gedragen door de Sint-Lucasbeweging. De Sint-Lucasscholen - de oudste dateert van 1862 - wilden een alternatief zijn voor het classicisme en de officiële kunstacademies. Zij moesten vakbekwame ambachtslieden en kunstenaars afleveren, trouw aan de christelijke neo-middeleeuwse kunstvisie van baron J.B. Bethune, die op zijn beurt geïnspireerd was door de Engelse bekeerling A.W.N. Pugin. Toch maakten de scholen zich rond de eeuwwisseling los uit het enge keurslijf van de neogotiek. In modernistische en christen-democratische kringen zocht men naar een meer eigentijdse vormentaal. Het waren Sint-Lucasleerlingen die, vertrekkend van de neogotiek, de Arts-and-Craftsbeweging en de Art Nouveau, in de kunstambachten en de architectuur een eigen Vlaams-katholieke synthese realiseerden, die b.v. mooi tot uiting komt in de vormgeving van Streuvels' woning 'Het Lijsternest'. In deze bundel worden voor het eerst verschillende facetten van die evolutie bestudeerd.

This volume examines the cultural contribution of religious institutes, men and women religious, and their role in the constitution of Catholic communities of communication in different European countries (England, Germany, Liechtenstein, the Low Countries, the Nordic Countries, Switzerland). The articles focus on social and cultural history by comparing both discourses and cultural and social practices, as well as examining international networks and cultural transference. How did religious institutes function as cultural elites in the production and mediation of knowledge, ideologies, cultural codes, and practices? What kind of discursive and operational strategies did they use to help construct and propagate social Catholicism, ultramontanism, and confessionalism, and to establish and promote the Catholic communication system? What were the central mechanisms in the production of knowledge and how were they incorporated within identity politics?0The volume also takes a broad perspective on the role of religious institutes in the production and propagation of religious, cultural, and social practices, and in the socialisation of the Catholic population. The focus is on cultural practices, on the transmission and transformation of attitudes, and on the rites and customs in everyday religious and social practices.

Sacred places have long exercised a special fascination. Sacred places are not static entities but reveal a historical dynamic. They are the result of cultural developments and have varied multidimensional levels of significance. They are places where time is, as it were, suspended, and they are points where holy times and holy places meet. Sacred places are places apart. It is this specificity in the context of the Christian religions of the West that 'Loci sacri' wishes to unveil by bringing together specialists from various disciplines, countries, and Christian denominations. One of the questions is why some sites have for centuries proven to be so popular while others have not. Another topic is the way in which extraordinary natural sites have been designated as sacred and given new meaning, primarily by means of architecture. "Loci sacri" also explores the 'eternal' character of this sacred status.
