L'objectif de ce livre est de parcourir les deux siècles qui nous séparent de la période révolutionnaire et tenter de rendre compte de l'étonnant chassé-croisé qui s'est joué entre histoire, historiographie et mémoire. À l'origine, chacun des textes ici rassemblés a été composé séparément ; chacun étudie un éclat de ce bloc monstrueux que composent les événements survenus dans notre pays entre 1789 et 1799, mais en y ajoutant ce qui a été dit et fait depuis lors à son propos. Mises ensemble et se répondant entre elles, ces études démontrent l'impossibilité de délier les concaténations entre les événements et leurs interprétations.
