The spatial and temporal dimensions of ecological phenomena have always been inherent in the conceptual framework of ecology, but only recently have they been incorporated explicitly into ecological theory, sampling design, experimental design and models. Statistical techniques for spatial analysis of ecological data are burgeoning and many ecologists are unfamiliar with what is available and how the techniques should be used correctly. This book gives an overview of the wide range of spatial statistics available to analyse ecological data, and provides advice and guidance for graduate students and practising researchers who are either about to embark on spatial analysis in ecological studies or who have started but are unsure how to proceed. Only a basic understanding of statistics is assumed and many schematic illustrations are given to complement or replace mathematical technicalities, making the book accessible to ecologists wishing to enter this important and fast-growing field for the first time.

"In the 1980s and early 1990s, a number of studies were published on intrasite spatial analysis following a surge of ethnoarchaeological work from the previous decade. Many of these publications were edited volumes "that dealt with the arrangement of artifacts within individual archaeological horizons from a range of site types" and were focused on mobile peoples (huntergatherers). They are now at least thirty years old. This volume focuses on current studies and new offerings of intrasite spatial analysis. During the intervening years, different approaches to intrasite spatial analysis were developed based on "higher quality data, technological innovations, and a more sophisticated understanding of what processes govern spatial patterning in the archaeological record.""--

Applied Spatial Analysis and Policy draws on spatial analysis for the assembly and interpretation of evidence, addressing such issues as crime and deprivation, immigration and demographic restructuring, retail activity and employment change, resource management and environmental improvement. The journal draws on applied research from such sources as transport, policing, education, health, environment and leisure to offer comparative policy analysis between domains and locations, and to stimulate ideas on the application of spatial analysis methods across varied policy contexts.

Exploratory data analysis (EDA) is about detecting and describing patterns, trends, and relations in data, motivated by certain purposes of investigation. As something relevant is detected in data, new questions arise, causing specific parts to be viewed in more detail. So EDA has a significant appeal: it involves hypothesis generation rather than mere hypothesis testing. The authors describe in detail and systemize approaches, techniques, and methods for exploring spatial and temporal data in particular. They start by developing a general view of data structures and characteristics and then build on top of this a general task typology, distinguishing between elementary and synoptic tasks. This typology is then applied to the description of existing approaches and technologies, resulting not just in recommendations for choosing methods but in a set of generic procedures for data exploration. Professionals practicing analysis will profit from tested solutions – illustrated in many examples – for reuse in the catalogue of techniques presented. Students and researchers will appreciate the detailed description and classification of exploration techniques, which are not limited to spatial data only. In addition, the general principles and approaches described will be useful for designers of new methods for EDA.
