Abstract

This book introduces the basics of cellular and molecular biology on a basic level including detailed explanations and examples. It lays the foundation for a systematic understanding of biology, which is essential in order to handle big data in biomedical research. Comprehension of what is measured, how it is measured and how to interpret results is a precondition for the development of novel therapies against diseases. Interdisciplinary research benefits from versatile approaches to generate and test hypotheses, which may lead to new discoveries. Therefore, it requires a new generation of biologists from diverse backgrounds - and they need this introduction. This book helps students and experts from e.g. computer science, informatics, mathematics, physics, and related fields or even if you are in sales and marketing and want to have a better understanding of the biology behind certain products. The Author Lorenz Adlung is an independent junior group leader for systems immunology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany. He obtained his PhD in systems biology from Heidelberg University and the German Cancer Research Center. Lorenz received his postdoctoral training at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. His original research articles are published in Journals like Molecular Systems Biology, and Cell. He won prestigious prizes e.g., the Young Investigators Award from the Gips Schüle Stiftung and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowship from the European Union. Lorenz is an advocate of interdisciplinary, free and open science. He gave a TEDx talk on the matter and loves scientific outreach.

Abstract

This book will be of immense helpful to the students of plant biotechnology, Agricultural sciences, Microbiology of both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in universities, colleges, and Research institutes. Besides the book will be quite supportive researchers who work in the field of plant biotechnology and agricultural sciences. In this book, the main focus will be on advanced genome editing approaches for the production of GM crops besides their socioeconomic, ethical and risk-biosafety assessments. Nanotechnology is the new emerging and fascinating field of science finds its application in almost all the major research areas and its uses in agriculture and food sectors are incipient. The books seems to be first in summarizing the two way interactive approach in the field of plant biotechnology and setting of a new arena in shaping the new bio techniques towards the sustainable cause.

Abstract

Oksana Ableitner offers a practical, clearly structured and easy to understand introduction to complicated definitions and structures in chemistry and molecular biology for work in the molecular biology laboratory. The author is guided by her experience in working with students and uses many illustrations to visualize abstract knowledge. An understanding of this matter is an essential basis for successful work with DNA and RNA in order to ensure high quality results. For responsible activities in application - such as genetic research or the determination of various pathogens - it is essential to be confident in dealing with the basics of these sensitive, fast and specific analytical methods. This Springer essential is a translation of the original German 2nd edition essentials, Einführung in die Molekularbiologie by Oksana Ableitner, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2018. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors. The content Basic concepts of molecular biology Molecular biological methods such as PCR, real-time PCR, gel electrophoresis, sequencing, MLST, microarray technology and PFGE Chemical calculation in the laboratory The target groups Students of biology, chemistry and medicine Medical and chemical-technical assistants, biomedical analysts The Author After studying chemistry and biology, Oksana Ableitner first worked as a teacher in a Ukrainian school. After further training as a chemical engineer in Graz, she has worked for many years in the Core Unit Molecular Biology at a laboratory in Graz and is responsible for the implementation and optimisation of various molecular biological processes. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Abstract

This book focuses on recent advances regarding clinical conditions and ailments whose mechanisms remain unclear, limiting our ability to treat them. The respective chapters address a range of multidisciplinary topics related to timely or emergent research areas, such as osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, the optimal surgical procedures for vertebral compression fractures, novel rehabilitative approaches in pelvic muscle training in case of urinary incontinence, and a rational approach to balneotherapy not only for the skin but also other organ systems disorders. Alterations in the endocrine function during strenuous physical activity at high altitude – a multi-stressor environment comprising hypobaric hypoxia, exercise, and nutritional changes – are presented as well. Other articles provide evidence-based insights into the diagnosis, mechanisms, and clinical course of respiratory infections in children such as bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and influenza. Finally, the pros and cons of e-health are discussed; a rapidly growing area based on the use of information and communication technology to streamline the flow of health information and patient-healthcare provider connections. The content is a well-structured blend of research and practical aspects, as well as updates on cutting-edge developments. All these essential topics are presented in a format suitable for medical professionals engaged in day-to-day patient care and therapy, as well as researchers, academics, and physiotherapists.
