The publication of this volume marks the Ten Year Anniversary of the Postcolonialism and Religions series. In intersectional and interdisciplinary perspectives, the chapters of this book constitute a complex whole: a volume that does justice to the justice-seeking origins of Latin American Liberation Theology, philosophy, and sociology as it emerged in the 1960s-70s and its development to the present. What drives this book is a common spirit and conviction: Liberation Theologies of the Global South remain relevant to the sociocultural and geopolitical contexts of today, which remain ensconced in the dynamics, exclusions, and resistances that gave rise to Liberation Theologies six decades ago. Today we may speak of interculturality, of borderlands, of in-betweenness, in ways that complicate, confirm, affirm, and interrogate the “underside of history”, and the spaces that are marginalized but de-centered centers of liberation struggle — within, alongside, underneath, over-against societal projects that claim and exclude them, and that represent some of the actual challenges and opportunities to liberation.

Selon certaines opinions, l'intelligence de la foi chrétienne traverserait aujourd'hui une sorte d'exil, de nature à la rendre étrange, voire étrangère, au regard des évolutions de la société et de la culture. C'est ce qui permettrait de comprendre tantôt la tentation de « repli » sur la spiritualité, tantôt le confinement de la pensée chrétienne dans les sphères spécialisées des institutions vouées à la recherche et aux publications scientifiques, ne touchant qu'un public des plus restreints. D'autres estiment au contraire qu'aujourd'hui plus que jamais, l'intelligence de la foi – en philosophie comme en théologie – se doit de relever les défis qui se présentent à elle dans le champ des pratiques sociales. L'articulation entre la foi et la raison resterait bancale sans « raison pratique » efficace, laquelle rend compte du logos de la foi, entendue intelligemment dans la vie sociale, et non à l'écart des réalités et des changements, des passions et des souffrances qui s'y manifestent. Dans une société souvent perçue aujourd'hui comme fragmentée, conflictuelle, voire menaçante, quelles sont les ressources que les « métiers » de théologien (ne) et de philosophe offrent à l'alliance dans la foi chrétienne de son intelligence et de sa pratique ?

En principe, la dignité humaine est une valeur fondamentale des sociétés démocratiques et son respect une norme inconditionnelle. Si aujourd'hui sa protection institutionnelle s'étend à des champs de plus en plus variés, son appropriation conflictuelle dans les différentes sphères de la société n'en brouille pas moins la signification, au point d'en relativiser la portée. D'où l'intérêt des textes publiés dans la première partie de cet ouvrage. Consacrés aux principales problématiques culturelles, institutionnelles et sociales contemporaines, ils nous invitent à y creuser la complexité de la notion de dignité, l'évolution de ses usages, les déplacements qui s'y opèrent et les débats que soulève le choix civilisationnel de considérer l'homme comme le bien le plus précieux pour l'homme, d'obliger à son respect inconditionnel dans sa propre personne et celle d'autrui. La dignité humaine et la dignité de Dieu sont-elles compatibles l'une avec l'autre ? Plus encore, est-il possible d'envisager qu'elles se promeuvent réciproquement, l'une grâce à l'autre ? Les rapports entre dignité humaine et divine ont très tôt préoccupé la théologie chrétienne, quand il a fallu montrer que l'incarnation et la kénose du Christ n'ôtaient rien à la dignité de Dieu, et qu'elles étaient la voie par laquelle l'humain retrouvait la sienne. Si de cette manière Dieu n'est pas étranger à notre condition humaine, c'est alors l'humanité commune qui est le lieu pour être digne et agir dignement, et en premier lieu là où la dignité humaine est à l'épreuve de sa vulnérabilité ou des dénis qu'on lui oppose. Dans le volet théologique de ce volume, quatre contributions montrent l'actualité de la question, en soulignant l'importance d'un « agir digne », sans lequel la dignité est réduite à une valeur incantatoire. Or le combat pour la dignité, sous ses multiples formes, c'est aussi la dignité elle-même qui se fraie un chemin d'humanisation : ce chemin qui n'est pas étranger à celui qu'emprunte l'agir…
