Abstract

Bringing together relational, systemic and ecological approaches, this pioneering book outlines a valuable integrative psychotherapeutic method and presents the core steps for implementing it into practice. The book provides a robust examination of the historical roots and theoretical underpinnings of the approach, alongside insights from contemporary neuroscience. The authors also offer a clear framework for carrying out integrative work, weaving together relational, systemic and ecological threads. Case studies highlight the practical applications of the method, and chapters on practice, ethics, supervision, and training provide a springboard for psychotherapy and counselling professionals and students to take forward the lessons offered and implement them in practice.

Abstract

"What is integrative psychotherapy? How effective is the integrative approach to therapy? And what are its limitations? Answering these and other significant questions, this insightful volume provides the working clinician with a practical guide to using an integrative approach to psychotherapy.Erskine and Moursund, both experienced psychotherapists, begin their discussion with a masterful theoretical overview which integrates diverse concepts from various therapy techniques such as psychoanalysis, client-centred therapy, and Gestalt therapy. The authors then use transcripts of actual therapeutic sessions (with explanatory comments interjected) to provide the reader with a broader understanding of both theory and its application in therapy - and to capture some of the elusive essence of the ongoing therapy interview.Unique in its attention to detail, as well as to the therapist's own decision-making process, advanced students and therapists alike will find this volume an invaluable resource."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Contemporary psychiatry is a field that is especially conducive to the principles of integrative medicine. With the exception of a few disorders, such as schizophrenia, most psychiatric disorders respond to interventions other than drugs. Patients who have not tolerated or not responded optimally to traditional treatments are also good candidates for integrative treatments. Additionally, herbals such as St. John's wort for the treatment of depression and ginkgo for the treatment of memory impairment in dementia have been found effective in traditional clinical trials. Patients' use of alternat

Abstract

Contemporary psychotherapists have come to realize that, given the complexity of human behaviour, no one theory can ever suffice to explain all situations, disorders, and clients. Over the past three decades, the ideological cold war and "dogma eat dogma" ambience have abated as clinicians look across and beyond single-school approaches to see what can be learned - and how patients can benefit - from alternative orientations. This volume provides a comprehensive state-of-the-art description of therapeutic integration and its clincial practices by the leading proponents of the movement. After presenting the concepts, history, research, and belief structures of psychotherapy integration, the book considers two exemplars of theoretical integration, technical eclectism, and common factors. The authors review integrative therapies for specific disorders, including anxiety, depression, and borderline personality disorder, along with integrative treatment modalities, such as combining individual and family therapy and integrating pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. The book concludes with a section on training and a look at future directions. Replete with clinical vignettes, this unique handbook is invaluable to practitioners and researchers alike.

Abstract

This book explores the contemporary practice of Neo-shamanism and its relationship to mental health. Chapters cover the practice of Neo-shamanism, how it differs from traditional shamanism, the technology of the shamanic journey, the lifeworlds of some of its practitioners, as well as its benefits and pitfalls. The author’s analysis draws on an in-depth study of existing literature, original qualitative-phenomenological research into the lifeworlds of practitioners, and nearly three decades of observation and experience as a student, teacher and practitioner of Neo-shamanism. She discusses the potential role of Neo-shamanic journey technology as an approach for psychology-based studies of consciousness and anomalous phenomena; its value as a tool for self-exploration as part of a supervised curriculum; as well as the possible therapeutic applications of the journey and shamanic healing protocols for use by mental health professionals. This book is a rich and timely resource for students and teachers of psychology, anthropology and sociology, psychotherapists, and anyone who is interested in consciousness and parapsychology. Karel James Bouse is the Director of the Institute of Esoteric Psychology, USA. She earned her Ph.D. in Psychology from Saybrook University, USA and her Ph.D. in History/American Studies from the University of Maryland, USA. She has been a student, teacher, and practitioner of Neo-shamanism for nearly 30 years.
