Abstract

"The book includes case studies examining the impact of the Little Ice Age on court painting and systems of representing marine life in the Joseon period in Korea. Other contributors consider contemporary artistic strategies, such as developing a 'sustainability aesthetics' and focusing attention to non-human agents, to respond to environmental damage and climate change in the present. Additional essays analyse the complicated art historical ecology of heritage sites and question the underlying anthropocentrism in art historical priorities and practices. As a whole, this anthology argues for the importance of ecological considerations in art history"--Page 4 of cover.

Abstract

"Trace metals are necessary for the proper functioning of living organisms and are absorbed by the body through diet or environmental exposure. However, excessive intake of trace metals can cause health problems. As such, the study of the presence of trace metals in the environment and their effects on health is important. This volume includes four chapters that provide details about trace metals in various contexts. Chapter One explains the nutritional zinc requirements of humans and discusses the usefulness of different supplements in various applications. Chapter Two addresses the different aspects of metal-microbial interactions, focusing on soil and sediment ecosystems. Chapter Three addresses pollution of heavy metals, emission sources, health implications, and commonly used methods for assessment of pollution. Lastly, Chapter Four assesses possible changes in the geochemical behavior of chromium caused by sediment resuspension in a hypereutrophic estuary that receives domestic and industrial effluents daily"--

Abstract

Climate change is one of the most important environmental problems faced by Planet Earth. The majority of CO2 emissions come from burning fossil fuels for energy production and improvements in energy efficiency shows the greatest potential for any single strategy to abate global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the energy sector. Energy related emissions account for almost 80% of the EU's total greenhouse gas emissions. The building sector is the largest energy user responsible for about 40% of the EU's total final energy consumption. In Europe the number of installed air conditioning sys

Abstract

Principles for Evaluating Building Materials in Sustainable Construction: Healthy and Sustainable Materials for the Built Environment provides a comprehensive overview of the issues associated with the selection of materials for sustainable construction, proposing a holistic and integrated approach. The book evaluates the issues involved in choosing materials from an ecosystem services perspective, from the design stage to the impact of materials on the health of building users. The three main sections of the book discuss building materials in relation to ecosystem services, the implications of materials choice at the design stage, and the impact of materials on building users and their health. The final section focuses on specific case studies that illustrate the richness of solutions that existed before the rise of contemporary construction and that are consistent with a sustainable approach to creating built environments. These are followed by modern examples which apply some, if not all, of the principles discussed in the first three sections of the book. Provides a holistic and integrated approach to the issues associated with the selection of materials for sustainable construction Provides a thorough understanding of ecosystem services based on ecology research for built environment design Provides an original review of the impact of materials on human health Provides case studies to illustrate the points above
