Based on the annual Rhind Lectures delivered in May 2019, David J. Breeze presents six papers on Hadrian's Wall. He first considers the historiographical background before examining specific aspects: its purpose and operation; its later history; and life on and around the Wall. Finally, he considers the Wall today and some aspects of its future.

The publication on the so-called „Temple of Hadrian" on Curetes' Street in Ephesos is the first comprehensive publication of this important monument from the Roman Imperial period in Asia Minor. Based on new research on architecture, inscriptions, and decoration, a contextual interpretation allows us to understand the temple in the context of the cult for the city goddess Artemis and ritual processions through the Ephesian city center in her honor.Text see: http://e-book.fwf.ac.at/o:1150Tables see: http://e-book.fwf.ac.at/o:1151

The Second Century occupies a central place in the development of ancient Christianity. The aim of the book is to examine how in the cultural, social, and religious efflorescence of the Second Century, to be witnessed in phenomena such as the Second Sophistic, Christianity found a peculiar way of integrating into the more general transformation of the Empire and how this allowed the emerging religion to establish and flourish in Graeco-Roman society. Hadrian's reign was the starting point of that process and opened new possibilities of self-definition and external self-presentation to Christianity, as well as to other social and religious agencies. Differently from Judaism, however, Christianity fully seized the opportunity, thus gaining an increasing place in Graeco-Roman society, which ultimately led to the first Christian peace under the Severan emperors. The point at issue is examined from a multi-disciplinary perspective (including archaeology, cultural, religious, and political history) to challenge well-established, but no longer satisfactory, historical and hermeneutical paradigms. The contributors aim to examine institutional issues and sociocultural processes in their different aspects, as they were made possible on Hadrian's initiative and resulted in the merge of early Christianity into the Roman Empire.

In the eighth and ninth centuries, the papacy had to deal with with a multitude of ‘others’ aunder variing circumstances. This book researches three cases that have had a considerable impact on the papacy: the representation of the Byzantine or ‘Greek’ empire and the communication with and about the Lombards and the Franks, both in the eighth century, as well as the conflict with Muslim groups called Saracens in the ninth century. Jahrhundert.

Greetings, I ask that you send the things which I need for the use of my boys . . . which you well know I cannot properly get hold of here . . . --A Roman solider on the frontier of England around AD 100 Over three hundred letters and documents were recently discovered at the fort of Vindolanda, in Northern England, written on wooden tablets which have survived nearly 2,000 years. Painstakingly deciphered by Alan Bowman, the materials contribute a wealth of evidence for daily life in the Roman Empire. Military documents testify to the lifestyle of officers and soldiers stationed at Vindolanda,

Hadrian’s Wall was inscribed as a World Heritage Site (WHS) in 1987 and, with the German Limes, became one of the first two parts of the transnational ‘Frontiers of the Roman Empire’ (FRE) WHS in 2005. The World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall is unusual, although not unique, among World Heritage sites in its scale and linear nature: stretching from Ravenglass on the west coast of England to Newcastle upon Tyne on the east coast - over 150 miles. Along its length it passes through two major urban centres and a variety of rural landscapes and its remains vary from substantial upstanding architectural features to invisible below ground archaeology. Traditionally many of the constituent parts of Hadrian's Wall, forts etc, have been managed as separate entities by different State and private organisations. These and other issues make it an extremely complex WHS to manage. This book not only chronicles the past management of the Wall but also looks towards the future as more countries aspire to have their Roman frontiers added to the FRE. The experience gained over the last two decades illustrates developments in the management of large scale complex heritage sites that will be of value as a detailed case study to those involved in (and affected by) heritage management, as well as academics, and students. Many of the issues raised will find resonance in those faced by many other large (World) heritage sites.
