According to the National Institute of Health, a genome-wide association study is defined as any study of genetic variation across the entire human genome that is designed to identify genetic associations with observable traits (such as blood pressure or weight), or the presence or absence of a disease or condition. Whole genome information, when combined with clinical and other phenotype data, offers the potential for increased understanding of basic biological processes affecting human health, improvement in the prediction of disease and patient care, and ultimately the realization of the pr

With the completion of human genome sequencing, human genetics is poised for major developments in functional genomics, molecular diagnostics, pathogenesis of complex multifactorial diseases and gene-based therapy. This book includes manuscripts from an international symposium on human genetics and gene therapy as well as articles written by a selection of young researchers in the Asia Pacific region who are actively involved in a diverse range of medical problems, including cancers, infections, hypertension and myopia. New technologies being developed in gene therapy, lab-on-chips and bioinfo

Rajesh Pandey's lab focuses on Integrative Genomics of Host-Pathogen wherein RNA plays a central role towards modulating pathogenicity. RNA-Based Regulation in Human Health and Disease offers an in-depth exploration of RNA-mediated genome regulation at different hierarchies. Beginning with a multitude of canonical and noncanonical RNA populations, especially noncoding RNA in human physiology and evolution, further sections examine the various classes of RNAs (from small to large noncoding and extracellular RNAs), functional categories of RNA regulation (RNA-binding proteins, alternative splicing, RNA editing, antisense transcripts, and RNA G-quadruplexes), dynamic aspects of RNA regulation modulating physiological homeostasis (aging), role of RNA beyond humans, tools and technologies for RNA research (wet lab and computational), and future prospects for RNA-based diagnostics and therapeutics. One of the core strengths of the book includes spectrum of disease-specific chapters from experts in the field highlighting RNA-based regulation in metabolic and neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, inflammatory disease, viral and bacterial infections. We hope the book helps researchers, students, and clinicians appreciate the role of RNA-based regulation in genome regulation, aiding the development of useful biomarkers for prognosis, diagnosis, and novel RNA-based therapeutics. --

What is meant by genetic information? How can knowledge about the genetic information of a person be responsibly handled? An interdisciplinary symposium at Tübingen University tackled this whole complex of issues. There are contributions on the various aspects from specialists in biology, medicine, ethics and law.

In the nearly 60 years since Watson and Crick proposed the double helical structure of DNA, the molecule of heredity, waves of discoveries have made genetics the most thrilling field in the sciences. The study of genes and genomics today explores all aspects of the life with relevance in the lab, in the doctor's office, in the courtroom and even in social relationships. In this helpful guidebook, one of the most respected and accomplished human geneticists of our time communicates the importance of genes and genomics studies in all aspects of life. With the use of core concepts and the int

This comprehensive reference work covers the full range of congenital syndromes. The first section uses a general approach discussing broad topics such as worldwide prevalence and possible etiologies of congenital syndromes including genetics, epigenetics and environmental factors. As well as the most common inheritance patterns of congenital syndromes. The next part of the work is organised in sections based on system specified classification of congenital syndromes. The main characteristics of each syndrome are summarized, including background and history, other name, etiology (genetics, epigenetics, and environment), clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and prognosis, and differential diagnosis. Covering all known congenital syndromes and defining their characteristics, this book is the ultimate reference for clinicians, researchers, and students primary in the fields of genetics and pediatrics but also in other fields as it covers the syndromes of all systems. This book is particularly useful for clinicians in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to patients. With its apposite and easy-to-use classification this reference work offers straight-forward access to each syndrome. .
