Abstract

Inequalities for Differential and Integral Equations has long been needed; it contains material which is hard to find in other books. Written by a major contributor to the field, this comprehensive resource contains many inequalities which have only recently appeared in the literature and which can be used as powerful tools in the development of applications in the theory of new classes of differential and integral equations. For researchers working in this area, it will be a valuable source of reference and inspiration. It could also be used as the text for an advanced graduate course.

Abstract

This largely self-contained treatment surveys, unites and extends some 20 years of research on direct and inverse problems for canonical systems of integral and differential equations and related systems. Five basic inverse problems are studied in which the main part of the given data is either a monodromy matrix; an input scattering matrix; an input impedance matrix; a matrix valued spectral function; or an asymptotic scattering matrix. The corresponding direct problems are also treated. The book incorporates introductions to the theory of matrix valued entire functions, reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of vector valued entire functions (with special attention to two important spaces introduced by L. de Branges), the theory of J-inner matrix valued functions and their application to bitangential interpolation and extension problems, which can be used independently for courses and seminars in analysis or for self-study. A number of examples are presented to illustrate the theory.

Abstract

This comprehensive textbook on linear integral equations and integral transforms is aimed at senior undergraduate and graduate students of mathematics and physics. The book covers a range of topics including Volterra and Fredholm integral equations, the second kind of integral equations with symmetric kernels, eigenvalues and eigen functions, the Hilbert–Schmidt theorem, and the solution of Abel integral equations by using an elementary method. In addition, the book covers various integral transforms including Fourier, Laplace, Mellin, Hankel, and Z-transforms. One of the unique features of the book is a general method for the construction of various integral transforms and their inverses, which is based on the properties of delta function representation in terms of Green’s function of a Sturm–Liouville type ordinary differential equation and its applications to physical problems. The book is divided into two parts: integral equations and integral transforms. Each chapter is supplemented with numerous illustrative examples to aid in understanding. The clear and concise presentation of the topics covered makes this book an ideal resource for students, researchers, and professionals interested in the theory and application of linear integral equations and integral transforms.

Abstract

This monograph offers a self-contained introduction to the regularity theory for integro-differential elliptic equations, mostly developed in the 21st century. This class of equations finds relevance in fields such as analysis, probability theory, mathematical physics, and in several contexts in the applied sciences. The work gives a detailed presentation of all the necessary techniques, with a primary focus on the main ideas rather than on proving all the results in their greatest generality. The basic building blocks are presented first, with the study of the square root of the Laplacian, and weak solutions to linear equations. Subsequently, the theory of viscosity solutions to nonlinear equations is developed, and proofs are provided for the main known results in this context. The analysis finishes with the investigation of obstacle problems for integro-differential operators and establishes the regularity of solutions and free boundaries. A distinctive feature of this work lies in its presentation of nearly all covered material in a monographic format for the first time, and several proofs streamline, and often simplify, those in the original papers. Furthermore, various open problems are listed throughout the chapters.

Abstract

In this book, we study theoretical and practical aspects of computing methods for mathematical modelling of nonlinear systems. A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a non-Lagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation;methods for low-rank
