This book assesses democratic resilience and challenges in (relatively) newly emerging democracies in the Asia-Pacific, which are simultaneously important case studies as newly emerging middle powers. Across all dimensions and measurements, South Korea and Indonesia are consistently the most salient case studies to consider. The two case studies are compared across three sections. First, the relationship between economic development and democratic resilience in Indonesia and South Korea. Second, nature of political culture and societal constructs in the two case studies. The final section looks at the potential peculiarities of the two case studies, which are seen as uniquely challenged: Indonesia by religious persecution and South Korea by political populism. Certainly, democratization is a long and difficult process. This book provides insight into how the two countries have embarked on similar democratization projects. It also delineates the successes and failures from which valuable lessons on democratization can be drawn. Nepal has a non-neutral history. As an imperial and expansionist power in the Himalayas from the days of its unification in 1769 AD to the Anglo-Nepal war of 1815, Nepal never remained neutral. Also, during the period of Colonialism in South Asia, and particularly after losing the war with the British in 1816, Nepal never exercised the policy of neutrality. Rather, Nepal was raiding Tibet; assisting British India in Sepoy Mutiny; and stood by Britain in the two world wars. Besides, Nepal militarily backed independent India in 1948 over Hyderabad question. But why Nepal suddenly had to take a refuge in neutrality after the political change of 1950? Was it because of Nepal's internal politics, or an attempt to cope with new arrangements in regional security? Nepal's fascination with neutrality was so swifter and inadvertent that Kathmandu, hitherto, has never initiated any policy debates over the all-weather choice. Power elites in Nepal still misperceive neutrality as non-alignment. The aim of the book, however, is not only limited to distinguishing neutrality with non-alignment in the Nepali context but weighs Nepal's claim to neutrality through the Indian and Chinese perceptions to underline the presence of ambiguity and uncertainty in Nepal's claim to neutrality. Illustrating Nepal's attempt to neutrality as a mere survival strategy, this study is less hopeful about Nepal's foreign policy institutions abandoning their Cold War worldview by embracing the strategy of sustenance in today's interdependent and globalized world. Because, as the book suggests, power elites in Kathmandu are customarily lured by the ephemeral yet sporadic geopolitical ambitions, either through discourses or deeds. This book is a study of transnationalism, focusing on experience of migrants, immigrants, travelers, expatriates, aliens, evacuees, refugees, and nomad in the world, broadly, and Taiwan, particularly. Offering an entirely new framework for what Taiwan as a contested transnational space means for Asia-a heterotopia, in which multiple visions of politics and society can flourish-Dr. Pendery's refreshing vision offers insights for scholars of greater China, international relations, and the economics of the region. Pendery establishes a dialog and debate in the book pitting Samuel P. Huntington, Stephen Toulmin, and Edward W. Said, broadly examining their views of these ideas and issues. David Pendery grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, moving to San Francisco in 1984, and obtaining his B.A. in International Relations at San Francisco State University. He received an M.S. in Journalism at Boston University. He relocated to Taipei, Taiwan in 2000, and obtained his Ph.D. in English literature at National Chengchi University in Taipei. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Foreign Languages at National Taipei University of Business. He is married to a Taiwanese woman, and they have a five-year-old daughter.

This book examines the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in East Africa. The BRI is considered China's central geopolitical and geo-economic project in the era of President Xi Jinping. Through this work, the author aims to contribute to filling some research gaps, such as the lack of depth in studies of individual BRI projects and the underconsideration of processing narratives in participating countries. The guiding question is the extent to which the BRI is a political or hegemonic project of the CCP-directed state-civil society complex in East Africa. To answer these questions, databases of international organizations and policy documents are analyzed. In addition, the author conducts a qualitative content analysis of newspaper articles from local media houses in the countries of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania to examine three infrastructure projects. The work illustrates that the BRI contributes to increasing connectivity in East Africa. At the same time, the compression of economic relations and the implementation of infrastructure projects in East Africa lead to numerous consequences and contour a hegemonic project. The Author Simon Züfle studied political science, history and international relations in Freiburg, Tübingen, Madrid, Moscow, Tehran and Beijing. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the research group "Doing Business in Africa" at the ESB Business School of Reutlingen University.
