This book, “Readings in Advanced Pharmacokinetics - Theory, Methods and Applications”, covers up to date information and practical topics related to the study of drug pharmacokinetics in humans and in animals. The book is designed to offer scientists, clinicians and researchers a choice to logically build their knowledge in pharmacokinetics from basic concepts to advanced applications. This book is organized into two sections. The first section discusses advanced theories that include a wide range of topics; from bioequivalence studies, pharmacogenomics in relation to pharmacokinetics, computer based simulation concepts to drug interactions of herbal medicines and veterinary pharmacokinetics. The second section advances theory to practice offering several examples of methods and applications in advanced pharmacokinetics.

This book provides a practical introduction to the main concepts of pharmacokinetics and how they can be applied in clinical settings, without using complicated mathematical equations. Essential information on approaches to drug-dosing and monitoring in special populations, including patients with renal and hepatic diseases and elderly patients, are given. Charts, illustrations and examples of calculations are added to clarify concepts and terminology of pharmacokinetics. It's a guide for students and clinicians who want clear, useful guidance to the basic principles of pharmacokinetics and th

This comprehensive volume provides an update on the current state of pharmacometrics in drug development. It consists of nineteen chapters all written by leading scientists from the pharmaceutical industry, regulatory agencies and academia. After an introduction of the basic pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic concepts of pharmacometrics in drug development, the book presents numerous examples of specific applications that utilize pharmacometrics with modeling and simulations over a variety of therapeutic areas, including pediatrics, diabetes, obesity, infections, psychiatrics, Alzheimer’s disease, and dermatology, among others. The examples illustrate how results from all phases of drug development can be integrated in a more timely and cost-effective process. Applying pharmacometric decision tools during drug development can allow objective, data-based decision making. At the same time, the process can identify redundant or unnecessary experiments as well as some costly clinical trials that can be avoided. In addition to cost saving by expedited development of successful drug candidates, pharmacometrics has an important economic impact in drug product selection. Unsuccessful drug candidates can be identified early and discontinued without expending efforts required for additional studies and allocating limited resources. Hence, pharmacometric modeling and simulation has become a powerful tool to bring new and better medications to the patient at a faster pace and with greater probability of success.

This book is a comprehensive resource on psychotropic medications, detailing the latest methods for defining their characteristics, their use in different patient populations, and drug-drug interactions; an important collection of information forclinicians, students, researchers, and members of the pharmaceutical industry alike. The first section provides the foundational principles of these drugs. Mathematical modeling of parameters that affect their entryto, and exit from, the central nervous system (CNS) compartment are presented on an individual basis and then applied to target populations with specific disease states. Methods and characteristics that inform the transfer of these drugs from the laboratory bench to use in patient care are discussed, including imaging techniques, genetics and physiological barriers, such as the blood-brain barrier. The second section describes the characteristics of specific agents, nominally arranged intodifferent therapeutic categories and with reference crossover use in different disease states. The pharmacologic characteristics of different drug formulations are explored in the context of their ability to improve patient adherence. The third section focuses on drug-drug interactions.Psychotropic medications from different categories are frequently prescribed together,or alongside medications used to treat comorbid conditions, and the information provided is directly relevant to the clinic, as a result. The clinical application of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of CNS agents has made significant progress over the past 50 years and new information is reported by numerous publications in psychiatry, neurology, and pharmacology. Our understanding of the interrelationship between these medications, receptors, drug transporters, as well as techniques for measurement and monitoring their interactions, isfrequently updated. However, with information presented on a host of different platforms, and in different formats, obtaining the full picture can be difficult. This title aims to collate this information into a single source that can be easily interpreted and applied towards patient care by the clinical practitioner, and act as a reference for all others who have an interest in psychopharmacological agents.
