Hematology has constantly been advancing in parallel with technological developments that have expanded our understanding of the phenotypic, genetic, and molecular complexity and extreme clinical and biological heterogeneity of leukemias. This in turn allowed for developing more effective and less toxic alternative therapeutic approaches directed against critical molecular pathways in leukemic cells. The continuous and rather extensive influx of new information regarding the key features and underlying mechanisms as well as treatment options of leukemias requires frequent updating of this topic. The primary objective of this book is to provide the specialists involved in the clinical management and experimental research of acute and chronic leukemias with comprehensive and concise information on some important theoretical and practical developments in the biology, clinical assessment, and treatment of patients with leukemias; on specific clinical scenarios such as pregnancy or age; as well as on some molecular and pathogenetic mechanisms and their respective translation into novel therapies.

Leukemias are a group of heterogeneous neoplastic disorders, that differ significantly in terms of morhological, immunophenotypic, cytogenetic and molecular features of malignant cells. These specific features reflect the differences in the spectrum of underlying biological alterations involved in malignant transformation, and/or variations in the level of hematopoietic stem cells hierarchy where the transforming events occur. The continuous and rather extensive influx of new information regarding the pathogenesis and treatment of leukemias requires a frequent updating of this topic. Better therapy of acute leukemias depends ultimately on better understanding of the distinction between leukemic and normal progenitor cells. Thus, several chapters in this volume describe current knowledge of acute leukemia biology and discuss new classification systems that have arisen consequent to emerging insights into pathogenesis. Treatment has also improved for particular types of acute leukemia. Given our intention that the book be useful to clinicians, we pay particular attention to these advances, to management of acute leukemia in general, and to development of new therapies.

In the current practice of modern medicine, the treatment of infectious and nutritional disorders is well established. In contrast, currently genetic disorders/diseases and cancer constitute a substantial load in the clinic. The care of genetic-based diseases and cancer has become a major task in medical practices worldwide and it is unprecedented. It will be rare for any family to be entirely free of genetic disease, therefore genetic diseases impose a huge burden upon individuals, families, and societies. Modern medicine is at the crossroads in the new genomic era with the development of more and more modern technologies. Remarkable advances have been well achieved in defining and classifying these genetic-associated diseases. Leukemia Research is an international journal which brings comprehensive and current information to all health care professionals involved in basic and (or) applied clinical research in leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma and other hematologic malignancies. The editors encourage the submission of articles relevant to normal and leukemic hemopoiesis, biochemistry, cell biology, immunology and molecular biology as well as epidemiologic and clinical studies.
