Abstract

This volume contains more than 300 letters by John Stuart Mill that have been discovered since the publication of Earlier Letters in 1962 and Later Letters in 1972. The collection covers a vast rangle of topics, and includes three groups of letters of special interest: a series of notes to Henry Cole, friend and ally of Mill, dealing among other things with the disposition of the London and Westminster Review; the full versions of letters to Theodor Gomperz, Mill's leading German disciple and translator, which had been thought destroyed; and, most exceptionally, recently found internal correspondence in the Examiner's Office of the East India Company, which sheds new light on Mill's career. The introduction to the volume, by Marion Filipiuk, places the letters in context, gives detail about the three special groups, and outlines the history of the collection. The letters are presented in full scholarly form, with notes giving information about the texts and their provenance, and also historical and bibliographic information. An appendix provides the first published check-list of letters to Mill, with their locations. Other appendices give variant readings from the Gomperz leters, a finding list of form letters signed by Mill in the India Office Library and Records, an index of correspondents represented in this volume, an index of persons and works cited in the letters, and an analytical index.

Abstract

The year 2006 marked the two hundredth anniversary of John Stuart Mill's birth. Though his philosophical reputation has varied greatly, it is now clear that Mill ranks among the most influential modern political thinkers. Despite his enduring influence, the breadth and complexity of Mill's political thought is often underappreciated. While his writings remain a touchstone for debates over liberty and liberalism, many other important dimensions of his political philosophy have until recently been ignored. This book aims to correct such neglect, by illustrating the breadth and depth of Mill's political writings, by drawing together a collection of essays whose authors explore underappreciated elements of Mill's political philosophy. The book shows how Mill's thinking remains pertinent to our own political life in three broad areas - democratic institutions and culture, liberalism, and international politics - and offers a critical reassessment of Mill's political philosophy in light of recent political developments and transformations.

Abstract

David O. Brink offers a reconstruction and assessment of John Stuart Mill's contributions to the utilitarian and liberal traditions. Brink defends interpretations of key elements in Mill's moral and political thought, and shows how a perfectionist reading of his conception of happiness has a significant impact on other aspects of his philosophy.

Abstract

A colorful history of utilitarianism told through the lives and ideas of Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill, and its other foundersIn The Happiness Philosophers, Bart Schultz tells the colorful story of the lives and legacies of the founders of utilitarianism-one of the most influential yet misunderstood and maligned philosophies of the past two centuries.Best known for arguing that "it is the greatest happiness of the greatest number that is the measure of right and wrong," utilitarianism was developed by the radical philosophers, critics, and social reformers William Godwin (the husband of Mary Wollstonecraft and father of Mary Shelley), Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart and Harriet Taylor Mill, and Henry Sidgwick. Together, they had a profound influence on nineteenth-century reforms, in areas ranging from law, politics, and economics to morals, education, and women's rights. Their work transformed life in ways we take for granted today. Bentham even advocated the decriminalization of same-sex acts, decades before the cause was taken up by other activists. As Bertrand Russell wrote about Bentham in the late 1920s, "There can be no doubt that nine-tenths of the people living in England in the latter part of last century were happier than they would have been if he had never lived." Yet in part because of its misleading name and the caricatures popularized by figures as varied as Dickens, Marx, and Foucault, utilitarianism is sometimes still dismissed as cold, calculating, inhuman, and simplistic.By revealing the fascinating human sides of the remarkable pioneers of utilitarianism, The Happiness Philosophers provides a richer understanding and appreciation of their philosophical and political perspectives-one that also helps explain why utilitarianism is experiencing a renaissance today and is again being used to tackle some of the world's most serious problems.

Abstract

In Reforming Liberalism, Robert Devigne challenges prevailing interpretations of the political and moral thought of John Stuart Mill and the theoretical underpinnings of modern liberal philosophy. He explains how Mill drew from ancient and romantic thought as well as past religious practices to reconcile conflicts and antinomies (liberty and virtue, self-interest and morality, equality and human excellence) that were hobbling traditional liberalism. The book shows that Mill, regarded as a seminal writer in the liberal tradition, critiques liberalism's weaknesses with a forcefulness usually associated with its well-known critics. Devigne explores Mill's writings to demonstrate how his thought has been misconstrued--as well as oversimplified--to the detriment of our understanding of liberalism itself.

Abstract

Liberalism is typically misconceived as a philosophy of individualism, which cannot accept that man exists in society and that man's values are shaped by that society. This book attempts to identify the role of community and society in the political and social thought of leading liberal social philosophers of the 19th and 20th centuries including John Stuart Mill, Herbert Spencer and Friedrich A. von Hayek. While differing as to the nature of man and society, each thinker examined holds the basic premise that man is not an isolated creature whose life is 'nasty, brutish and short' but r

Abstract

This book considers the relationship between Hayek and Mill, taking issues with Hayek's criticism of Mill and providing a broader perspective of the liberal tradition. Featuring contributions from the likes of Ross Emmett, Leon Montes and Robert Garnett, these chapters ask whether Hayek had an accurate reading of the ideas of Mill and Smith, as well as considering themes such as sympathy and analytical egalitarianism that play a large part in the liberal tradition, but less in work of Hayek These chapters argue that addition of these key ideas to the Hayekian corpus leads to a far broader u

Abstract

This book discusses John Stuart Mill’s intellectual activity from about 1827 to 1848, namely between his recovery from his so-called ‘Mental Crisis’ and the publication of Principles of Political Economy. During this period, along with deepening his understanding of contemporary society as commercial civilization, Mill aspired to create a new system of science of society which would inquire into the nature, process of historical change, and prospects of society. Among the indispensable constituent sciences of his system, this book pays particular attention on his projected sciences of history and of the formation of character (ethology), and clarifies that the implications of his interest in these sciences were more significant for the better understanding of Mill’s political thought than many scholars have assumed.
