Abstract

"Obesity continues to accelerate resulting in an unprecedented epidemic that shows no significant signs of slowing down any time soon. The World Health Organization reports that in 2016, nearly 2 billion adults were overweight and that worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975. Obesity: Global Impact and Epidemiology is an important tool in proving a link to new knowledge, serving researchers and clinicians. The field of obesity is evolving very quickly and there is an abundance of scientific data that has emerged and is emerging constantly. Researchers and physicians need new updated information about the epidemiology and global impact of obesity that come from authors that have a wide perspective in the field. For health professionals and researchers, there is a need to understand how obesity begins. While a simple question, the answer is very complex"--

Abstract

The World Health Organization has accepted obesity as a global epidemic. The prevalence of obesity is increasing rapidly in industrialized and developing countries. In many countries, obese and overweight adults make up nearly 50% of the population; furthermore, a quarter of children around the world are overweight and obese. Obesity is a chronic systemic inflammation of the adipose tissue. The mechanism of energy intake and expenditure is a homeostatic process. When the balance is upset in favor of energy intake, the result is excessive fat accumulation, which causes a number of diseases. Therefore, obesity can be defined as a multifactorial and heterogeneous disease that leads to adverse cellular and metabolic effects. The underlying mechanisms of obesity are not well understood, but evidence points to oxidative damage. To combat obesity effectively, its pathogenesis must be clearly understood. An understanding of the molecular mechanisms of obesity and obesity-related diseases could lead to the discovery of new therapies and preventive methods. Improvements in environmental conditions, education, preventative measures for at-risk groups, and promotion of healthy diets and physical activity are effective methods for fighting obesity.

Abstract

Many factors influence obesity including genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Studies have shown obesity to be related to increased risk of human diseases. Despite efforts by health professionals to regulate obesity, its prevalence has increased globally in the past few decades. A better understanding of the causes of obesity and mechanisms by which obesity increases the risk of human diseases can lead to developing effective strategies that can save many lives worldwide. This book addresses some important aspects of the relationship between obesity and human health. Chapters cover such topics as body mass index, endocrine disorders, obesity, and endometrial cancer, the role of lifestyle factors in obesity, and much more.

Abstract

Although research on obesity has accelerated over the past decade, the proportion of Americans considered obese has not declined. In order to address this critical public health challenge, obesity research has recently shifted from focusing purely on individual causes to viewing individuals within their ""obesogenic"" or living environments. Encompassing both schools of thought, Obesity 101 is the first volume to offer a broad and balanced perspective on the complex factors that influence obesity. The text combines current research from multiple perspectives to provide an introductory-level, r

Abstract

Over the last two decades, obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the world, resulting in suffering and premature death. Morbid obesity is a chronic medical illness that has long-reaching consequences and is caused by multiple factors. Bariatric surgery and other non-invasive procedures in carefully selected patients are effective treatments for obesity. It is the only tool for sustained and effective long-term weight loss. The field of surgery is developing rapidly - offering innovative options for patients who have failed to lose weight by diet, exercise and pharmacological methods. The

Abstract

"Nearly 69 percent of U.S. adults and 32 percent of children are either overweight or obese, creating an annual medical cost burden that may reach 1.47 billion dollars. Researchers and policy makers are eager to identify improved measures of environmental and policy factors that contribute to obesity prevention. The IOM formed the Committee on Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention to review the IOM's past obesity-related recommendations, identify a set of recommendations for future action, and recommend indicators of progress in implementing these actions. The committee held a workshop in March 2011 about how to improve measurement of progress in obesity prevention"--
