Abstract

This volume presents research on the histories and legacies of the German Expressionist group Blaue Reiter, the founding force behind modernist abstraction. It offers a perspective on familiar aspects of expressionism and abstraction, taking seriously the inheritance of modernism for the twenty-first century.

Abstract

The Bauhaus movement (meaning the "house of building") developed in three German cities - it began in Weimar between 1919 and 1925, then continued in Dessau, from 1925 to 1932, and finally ended in 1932-1933 in Berlin. Three leaders presided over the growth of the movement: Walter Gropius, from 1919 to 1928, Hannes Meyer, from 1928 to 1930, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, from 1930 to 1933. Founded by Gropius in the rather conservative city of Weimar, the new capital of Germany, which had just been defeated by the other European nations in the First World War, the movement became a flamboyant re

Abstract

No composer was more responsible for changes in the landscape of twentieth-century music than Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) and no other composer's music inspired a commensurate quantity and quality of technical description in the second half of the twentieth century. Yet there is still little understanding of the correlations between Schoenberg's musical thought and larger questions of cultural significance in and since his time: the formalistic descriptions of music theory do not generally engage larger questions in the history of ideas and scholars without understanding of the formidable musical technique are ill-equipped to understand the music with any profundity of thought. Schoenberg's Musical Imagination is intended to connect Schoenberg's music and critical writings to a larger world of ideas. While most technical studies of Schoenberg's music are limited to a single compositional period, this book traces changes in his attitudes as a composer and their impact on his ever-changing compositional style over the course of his remarkable career.

Abstract

Neue Sachlichkeit is thought by many to have too many diverse elements to be a unified movement. Originally divided by G.F. Hartlaub into two 'wings', Neue Sachlichkeit has since been broken down by critics into more groups, sometimes with opposing styles or regional influences. However, the importance of these divisions has rarely been explored in depth. Unlike previous surveys, which accept Neue Sachlichkeit as a divided entity, this book shows for the first time that in spite of its divisions, it may still be regarded as a unified, coherent movement. While different artists may have sought to express different specific concerns, what they all had in common was that they were uncomfortable with the world as it stood, and it is the way that this was expressed, making use of the object, that gave Neue Sachlichkeit its unity. This was just as true of the literature and photography of Neue Sachlichkeit , where the same themes as those found in the painting were frequently used. The fact that these are shared themes across different cultural media demonstrates that Neue Sachlichkeit reflected a mood of its time, and this book explores the ways in which this mood was expressed.
