In this book, cargo securing in road transport using the restraining method with top-over lashing is presented. Cargo securing is the prevention of slipping and tipping of cargo forward, sideways and backwards, which is a consequence of hard braking, vehicle cornering in roundabout, vehicle changing lanes, high acceleration, etc. Usually, the friction alone between the cargo and the load platform bed does not guarantee that the cargo would not slip or tip in case of hard braking, vehicle cornering, vehicle changing lanes and high acceleration. In the case of hard braking, extremely large inert

Long-haul trucks have been described as sweatshops on wheels. The typical long-haul trucker works the equivalent of two full-time jobs, often for little more than minimum wage. But it wasn't always this way. Trucking used to be one of the best working-class jobs in the United States. The Big Rig explains how this massive degradation in the quality of work has occurred, and how companies achieve a compliant and dedicated workforce despite it. Drawing on more than 100 in-depth interviews and years of extensive observation, including six months training and working as a long-haul trucker, Viscelli explains in detail how labor is recruited, trained, and used in the industry. He then shows how inexperienced workers are convinced to lease a truck and to work as independent contractors. He explains how deregulation and collective action by employers transformed trucking's labor markets--once dominated by the largest and most powerful union in US history--into an important example of the costs of contemporary labor markets for workers and the general public.

There are almost three million truck drivers in the United States today. In the past 30 years, there has been a constant demand for truck drivers. Most experts say there are never enough trained, experienced drivers to go around. As a truck driver, you can work for a trucking company or a wholesale or retail store. You can work for the government, or you can be in business for yourself, owning and operating your own rig. Trucks come in all shapes and sizes, large, medium and small, and some have special features, such as refrigeration. All of these types are used throughout the country.

The recent trend to deregulate industries has raised the question of whether deregulation means decreased safety. This book considers the question with regard to the airline and motor freight industries.

Long-haul trucking is linked to almost every industry in America, yet somehow the working-class drivers behind big rigs remain largely hidden from public view. Gritty, inspiring, and often devastating oral histories of gay, transsexual, and minority truck drivers allow award-winning author Anne Balay to shed new light on the harsh realities of truckers' lives behind the wheel. A licensed commercial truck driver herself, Balay discovers that, for people routinely subjected to prejudice, hatred, and violence in their hometowns and in the job market, trucking can provide an opportunity for safety, welcome isolation, and a chance to be themselves - even as the low-wage work is fraught with tightening regulations, constant surveillance, danger, and exploitation.

Recent developments in IC technologies have facilitated the practical application of dynamic vehicle routing systems. While most of the available dynamic approaches deal with urban area environments, the focus of this thesis is set to wide area dynamic freight transportation covering the entire European continent. Due to its dynamic planning component, the occasional transportation mode – independent of predefined line networks – is considered. The author develops and evaluates two new dynamic planning approaches and incorporates all important real-life restrictions, such as regulations on driving and working hours (EC 561). Numerical tests are carried out with a five-week real-life data set from an international freight forwarder. The results indicate that significant improvements, especially in terms of empty kilometers and service quality, can be achieved.
